I have decided to post some of my new and vintage fabric for sale. Wondering how does it work for recieving the money once someone buys the fabric. I just had a big blow out with PayPal as they sent the money to the wrong bank account that I don't have anymore and now it is lost in siber internet. So fustrated with the updates and changes that they made. Do any of you use money orders to pay for the fabric or have any suggestions. If you have some suggestions please let me know.

Some take checks, MO and cash. My suggestion is that you do not send the fabric til payment has been received and cleared at the bank.

First, you will need to become a "regular" member
Some sellers accept money orders and/or checks, it is what you the seller feel more comfortable with. Many don't send until the checks clear the bank. :D:D:D

Thank you for the suggestion, good idea to hold on to the fabric till the money is sent and in my hand.

I have been buying from several on line and I send a check. Most send the material or whatever on out. I have a few who wait to let the check clear. It is what you feel good about. I want to see what you have. I am homebound and can't go out and shop.

I will only pay via paypal for online purchases, as do many others. Sorry about your problems, but it's still the safest way for both the buyer and seller.

I posted some fabrics for sale around Thanksgiving.
My suggestions:
Double check the morning you post, to be sure you have "a regular here" above your avatar when you comment on a topic. If you do not, all your time is wasted because your posting will be dumped.
State clearly which forms of payment you will take. (I got nagged about not doing paypal.) I have been sending fabric as soon as I received the check, m.o., or cash.
Edit the title line above each item as soon as you have a request for that item. Pictures can be deleted when that fabric has been shipped.
Expect some people to take a couple of weeks to get around to sending payment -- don't be afraid to remind them! (Or set a time limit.)
I found "first class" better than flat rate envelopes for up to 1 1/2 yards. Compare to save on postage.
Good luck!

Someone else just posted about Google checkout, which works very similar to PayPal. You do need to set up a Google account. The biggest problem would be that it is so much more likely that a customer will have PayPal rather than Google.

PayPal has been by far the fastest way for me to purchase items. Because the seller has payment almost instantly, I don't have to wait before the item is shipped. As a seller I would find it more difficult to keep track of payments and shipments if accepting money orders and checks, plus for checks I would really want to have the check clear before sending the package.

I won't buy something from an online seller without paypal or some sort of third party.

A seller who only takes money orders would seem to have something to hide, because it offers the buyer ZERO protection if the seller is a fraud.

featherweight 12-16-2010 07:22 PM

I don't purchase anything that I can't use Paypal for payment. There are others that I have encountered that are the same way!!!

sewwhat85 12-16-2010 07:26 PM

i would only pay through pay pal for my protection

I am not hiding anything and I am a very honest person. I have sold on Ebay and used paypal for 8 years and had a lot sucess with my auctions and had no negative feed back. 2 years ago I stopped selling for a while and took a brake from it and when I went to update all my information they had closed the account for nonactivity and took some of my money that was still in my account.....do you think I am going to trust them again? So I won't post any fabric for sale since some people think I am some sort of con person.

hperttula123 12-16-2010 07:59 PM

I prefer doing paypal, it's quick and easy and can ship the next day(It's nice when you sell to have it just taken care of and if you are buying you know you won't have to wait so long). You should be able to change your bank info pretty easy there. Just do what you feel is comfortable. I've sold a little bit on here and I say that I prefer paypal but will take checks or money orders.

pennijanine 12-16-2010 08:11 PM

Nowhere in this thread have I seen someone call you or imply that you are a con. Everyone just did as you asked and gave you their opinion.

No one said you were a con person. You asked for opinions. I have been burned by sending a money order. The problem with a money order, is that once I put it in the mail, I now have to rely on the good graces of someone else. Each person has to look out for themselves in any transaction. And online transactions have a very high possibility of fraud.

With a check, you have the luxury of waiting until the check clears before you send the fabric. Would you trust that the check is good and just send the fabric once you receive the check? Something tells me that you wouldn't. By waiting for the check to clear, you are saying that you trust your buyer less than the buyer trusts you. Paypal, google checkout, etc makes trust a non issue, because there is a recourse should the shiteth hitteth the fan.

Once you are eligible to sell here (or anywhere you choose) it is completely up to you on what type of payments you take, but just know, that a percentage of your target audience will not buy under certain conditions.

I sell a few things here and I dont have pay pal either. I know some wont buy from someone with out pay pal, but I just dont feel comfortable banking online, ect. (I am on an old computer, with dial up), and like to keep my life as simple as possible!
I DONT wait til the check clears. WHEN they send the check or MO, I try to mail out the same day. I have never gotten a bad check here, or had any problems! A few people will change their minds, so I just wait to get the payment first, then I KNOW they want items!
Once you start selling, people will give you feed back, and once they see you have good feedback, they might feel more comfortable buying! I love buying here, and have gotten GREAT deals!

twinkie 12-16-2010 10:06 PM

I have purchased and I have sold on the forum. I have never had a problem. Many times I send the item I am selling even before I get the check or money order. I usually pay by check. I have a Pay Pal account and have sold and purchased on E-Bay and Etsy for several years and have 100% feedback. I do feel much more comfortable with the members on this board. I have found them to be 99 and 44/100% pure. LOL. I would suggest you read the rules at the top of the classified section and then decide for yourself what you want to do. Good Luck in whatever you decided to do.

quilt-fanatic 12-17-2010 12:21 AM

I do not have a Pay Pal account and don't intend to get one. Seems too complicated. I will continue to buy and use either check, money order or cash. I am totally honest and stand by my word - the check is in the mail! I freely give and welcome feedback.

Oh, please don't feel that way. People have their own experiences which make them feel the way they do. I understand your feelings about Paypal....although I have never had any problem... I know many, many with stories of unhappiness with them.

There are just as many people that use DO NOT use Paypal that Do use them. I certainly wouldn't worry about selling your fabrics here if you choose to. There will be many happy people to purchase your fabrics that choose not to use paypal. Unfortunately mostly Paypal members chimed in on your question and I don't think they meant to infer anything untowards. This is a large and diverse group and opinions are like.....well you know....everybody has one. So please don't take it personally. I think you would find many people happy to find your vintage fabrics.

Deborah12687 12-17-2010 01:49 PM

I want to apologise to everyone for getting upset yesterday and lost my cool. It wasn't a very good day for me yesterday as everything I did got messed up. I ended up talking with PayPal and got things straightened out. I guess I am not able to post my vintage and new fabric on the board till I reach being a regular on this board. So I will be selling on Ebay instead. I need to sell quite a bit so that we will have a good Christmas.
