Problem with quilting density

1 Attachment(s)
I knew better but did it anyway. I used dense fill quilting in applique squares (my mother colored these with pencils) and not so dense in the rest of the quilt. The quilt did not lay perfectly flat outside the squares and had a very rippled border after sewing on the binding. I used straight grain binding and pulled to try to lessen the ripple as I sewed, but it wasn't good enough. After removing the binding, I had to do more quilting in the border (twice) and then made gathering stitches by hand along the binding edge. When I restitched the binding, I had removed six inches from the outside edge.

I've learned my lesson to NEVER do this again. However, I do love how it turned out! My mother is in a nursing home (Parkinsons and severe osteoporosis with disformed hands) and all she can do for entertainment is use the Derwent Inktense pencils to color fabric. My sister who is her main caregiver and I draw the designs for her to color. This quilt will go to my sister as a remembrance of this activity.

That is a beautiful quilt!! The quilting is just wonderful. What ever issue you had certainly does not show , or at least not in the photo!

This is lovely and I'm sure if you hadn't told us we never would have known there had been a problem, your mother and you have done wonders on this quilt.

What a beautiful quilt! You did an excellent job of fixing the trouble spots. What a treasure - if I were your sister, this quilt would make me cry (with happiness, of course)!

turned out beautiful in spite of the issues

It's gorgeous now! Sorry it gave you such a hard time. I love to do pebbling but that can cause problems in a quilt too. I try to restrict it to small pieces where I do the whole background in it and then re-square. Someone needs to invent "Border Ease"! It's just a thought BUT I wonder if you put little squares of the shrink bubble stuff (can't remember the name) and made it a design element if you could shrink a wavy border. HMMMM, I may have to try it.:)

That is a very beautiful quilt. If you hadn't told us about the problems with it we would never have known. It's wonderful that you and your sister are making your mother's life more enjoyable.

It's beautiful. Ripples give it character, just like the wrinkles on our faces.

kathdavis 01-23-2012 06:17 PM

What a treasure!

toadmomma 01-24-2012 05:17 AM

Our quilt is beautiful. We all make mistakes in our quilting but your stuggle doesn't show at all! You and your sister will have fond memories of making this quilt for years to come!

janeknapp 01-24-2012 09:12 PM

Thanks for all of your comments. The quilt looks good in spite of the problems which I, luckily, was able to solve. I just wanted to share this, so that others would not make the same mistake.

Connie M. 01-24-2012 09:26 PM

Wow. Had you not said, I'd never know you had any problems with it. It is beautiful and I hope you feel it was worth all the trouble. Awesome Save!!

Your quilt turned out very beautiful, and I cannot see any problem with it. It is so nice that your mom has something that she can do. Im sure that it helps keep her going. I love the quilting in it also.
