I am about to try a "Quilt as you Go" king size quilt using the directions from quilterscache. The directions state that the sashing strips should be cut 1 3/4 inches and 1 1/8 inch. I tried it on a small sample block and it works wonderfully, but I wanted to have wider sashings. Can I increase the size of the sashing strips? Or if by doing that do I need to add more batting into those strip areas? Hope that makes sense to you. You will never know how much I appreciate and gleen from all of you. Your quilting wisdom is remarkable.

I have made huge quilt as you go quilts. I waste batting but make sure I have a lot hanging over along with backing material to insure everything is covered. Don't know if that info helps...

These sizes pull the finished blocks together so that they are edge to edge and making them wider will make a gap, BUT if you do not cut your batting the same size as your blocks, this leaves enough to 'fill' in the sashing and may work. I'd experiment.

not knowing what the directions say....my initial reaction is to cut the batting larger to begin with. Otherwise you will have to add a strip. Make sure your backing is large enough to accommodate the wider sashing.

I'd experiment too. It will really change the look.

you should adjust the batting measurements the same as the fabric...if you add an inch to the sashing size, add an inch to the batting size.

Thank you ladies! I haven't gotten to that point in the quilt yet, but think I have it figured out now. I'm actually starting to question my whole project; I'm using the dresden plate pattern and wonder if you think it will look "tacky" as I am making a memory quilt for my daughter using her grandparents clothing, pictures, etc. There are lots of different colors and no real blending. I'm starting to wonder if this was a good idea....But the blocks look really nice - one on one; I just can't picture all of them in one quilt top.

Thanks for your advice ~ here are a couple of pictures. Each block will be on a white backgrd and with white plain blocks between. I plan on 7 rows and a total of 25 blocks; some will have pictures on the centers and others with contrasting fabric centers. What do you think???
another question - my sample block felt rather firm and uncuddly - should I put two layers of soft and natural (white) instead of one. Will that make it feel softer??
