PTD Kona cotton
I purchased Kona cotton today and when I was having it cut I was told it was "prepared to dye". I bought it for it's creamy color and am planning on using it in a baby quilt--not to dye it. Now I'm wondering if when washed it will pick up the "free dye" from any colors that will be in the quilt. Also is the shrinkage any different from colored Kona cotton? Is the PTD and regular Kona interchangeable? Thanks for any help.

Thanks for asking the question. I will also watch for the answers.

http://www.dharmatrading.com/info/pfd.html My understanding is that it does not have sizing, starches, etc in the fabric. Hope this helps.

It will be fine it just not have any of the traditional "finishes" that other fabrics have that would resist or alter the dye process.

prepared for dying means it does not contain any sizing/ chemicals which will keep it from dying properly- when those of us who dye fabrics do not buy PFD's we have to (treat) them ourselves- as in washing= with detergent then rinsing-drying with no fabric softener---to remove any sizing, oils, chemicals which are in the fabrics-
you do not have to dye the fabric if you want to use it as is---you may find starch or sizing is helpful- it has not been soaked in soda ash - or anything that is part of the dying process- it will not ( pull color) or anything like that different from any other fabric. |
Just think of it as 'pure as a newborn babe'. :)

PTD just means it is ready for dying....no sizing aNa you dont have to pre treat it to dye...It will be Judy fine for your quilt. I have used it...
