Queen size quilt

I need to make a queen size quilt and not sure
what the finished size should be, so any help
would be appreciated.

there's no 'standard' size. The top of a queen mattress is 60X80. There's a lot that's up to you after that. How much do you want it to hang over the end of the bed? 4"? 10"? 14"? Do you want the top to tuck over the pillows, or will it just touch the headboard with the pillows on top. Let's say you want a 10 inch drop and no tuck. The quilt would be about 80X90 then.

Anxious to see when finished!

I would think it would depend on how much "hang" you want on it. I like mine to cover the mattress and box spring. If you measure your bed and add how much you want it to go down the sides, you should have your total size.

As others have said, it depends on the 'drop' you want on the sides/ends. Mattresses today are so thick it's just silly. Mine is 20+ inches thick - read really, really, expensive sheets! If it's for someone else, you'll need to know that info if it's important to you to cover the mattress and/or box spring. Then there's the half-height box springs for the giant mattresses...wish we had gotten one of those so I didn't need a step ladder to get into bed!

There really isn't any standard size for queen. I made a queen size double Irish Chain for my best friends and I ended up making a it almost a king size quilt since she didn't want a dust ruffle. When I would sell a queen size quilt, I made it approximately as close to the batting size which is 90"x108".

I make most of my queen size about 90x 100. That is for a standard without thick mattress.

If you have a certain batting you prefer to use, buy the queen size & make your quilt top fit it, just another suggestion.

If possible, I measure the bed the quilt is for, and find out if the person likes to do the pillow tuck or not. That's really the only way to get a guaranteed fit. Otherwise I usually look up the dimensions for good quality comforters online for whatever the bed size is, and see if I can find a sort of "average" size to go with.

I made a double for my MIL and had to measure her bed carefully - it's an antique bed where the head and footboard and side boards really sort of encase the mattress (so no room for extra fabric) and she doesn't use box springs and doesn't do a pillow tuck, so her quilt ended up much smaller than I would have made for someone else who uses a more modern style of bed. It really seemed TOO small when I finished it, but she says it fits great. *whew*

Don't forget to add a couple of inches all the way around if it's going to be washed. I may shrink up a little!
