Does the batting have to be alot larger than the top?
I finally have my SIL memory throw quilt top finished but my batting is a twin and it is the same size as the top except forabout 1/2inch on either sied.Alot more at top and bottom.

SOOO if I do have to have it larger on the sides can I sew some of the batting to the sides to make it larger without purchasing more batting?

I plan on SID or meandering. And something very simple on the borders.

a 1/2" may be pushing it... it just depends on how much the quilting sucks it into the top and backing...

So how do I know.I guess try first with large stitiches?

Are you hand or machine quilting it? If machine quilting will it be done on a sit down machine or on a frame system?

If the quilt will be hand quilted or quilted on a home sewing machine, where you will be basting the layers together first, you might have enough. You will be able to tell when you layer and baste.

If it is being done on a frame system where it is not basted first, then you will need more than 1/2 inch on the sides.

And yes, you can join pieces of batting together (but I would only do it if it will have a fair amount of quilting to hold everything together). I would just add it to one side, having the seam fall several inches in from the edge of the quilt.

Thanks so much. I am new to quilting and it will be done on my Janome Memory Craft 9000 just a reg sewing embrodery machine.
If I add batting to the side it will be even with the throw as it is already the same size as the batting except for maybe just a 1/4 or 1/2 inch on each side. I am going to start in the middle and work out and it is a memory quilt so the photos will be just stitched around them.

Moral to this story- use packaged batting that measures larger than your top. I used batting that said it was twin size for twin size top but the actual batting measurement was the same as the top and did not allow for extra needed for quilting. Now I use full (if I can find it)or queen for twin just to be on the safe side.
