For my design wall, I bought 2 yards of white felt, then tacked it all around on an open wall in my bedroom. To put up small pieces of fabric I simply pat the fabric across the felt and it usually stays, or I use pins to hold up the blocks side by side.

I would hesitate to use insulation, even covered with flannel or batting, as a design wall for a couple of reasons: the material crumbles easily under kitty claws, and is a potentially serious fire hazard from what I have been told.

I do like the idea of felt and am trying to find a good support for it.

I have got 3 boards of 4'x8' insulation, 5/8" thick. The boards have a foil-like covering on them so it's not exposed insulation. No cats anywhere. I've covered mine with batting. They can be just leaned against the wall or attached if you prefer.

Blocks, quilts and fabric stay up, but if I need to stick a pin in, I just do, with no worrying about the wall.

At $12/sheet, you can't go wrong.
