I've been in the board for a while now but am a lurker. I really need to change that. I enjoy reading all the topics and love looking at all the pictures of the beautiful quilts. There are so many talented people here. I'm in awe!
I know Kona cotton is an excellent fabric. I worked at Hobby Lobby in the fabric dept. for 2 years and know that Kona was a favorite with quilters. My question is this-- What is the difference between regular Kona cotton and Kona Premium Muslin? Both are 100% cotton. I don't know what the thread count is on regular Kona but it is 200 on the muslin.They have it in bleached white and natural. Has anyone used the muslin? The price is the same. Speaking of price, Fabric.com has their Kona for $4.98 a yard. Good price!

If it's Kona brand then it's made by the Kaufman company. So I would guess it's a good thing.

I have used Kona cottons, muslin included, and find all of them to be excellent.

I have used the Kona muslin 200 count as backing for my Dear Jane quilt. I can tell you that it isn't the same as the regular Kona solids. It feels lighter and finer, which was great for hand quilting.

I don't think I would mind using it in a pieced top, but it would go better with batiks (which are also finer) rather than the cotton we might usually use.

The Kaufman Kona muslin is very nice. It works just fine with regular quilting cottons. It irons up so nice, not wrinkly like the cheaper muslins.

Hmmmm are you sure about that. I've seen Kaufman Kona and just plain Kona at Hobby Lobby and there is a difference.
The Kaufman Kona had a better 'hand' to it. I think the price on sale was about $4.00/yard.

When I need it I purchase at HL.

I believe Kaufman owns the Kona brand name. In any case it should say Kaufman (as well as Kona) on the bolt end.

Thank you all for your input. As a former lead for the fabric dept. at HL I can tell you that when ordering muslin, it was never listed as "kona". But having said that, they do carry some very nice muslins. Kona was only listed as such for the "calico wall" which there is a wide variety of colors.
I may get a yard of the muslin from fabric.com to try with the redwork I am doing. I am trying to motivate myself into sewing after a 6 month funk. There are quilts I want to make but can't get in gear. That's why I started doing some redwork embroidery, something I can do while watching tv. Hoping I will break out the sewing machine when I have the squares done and make a wall hanging or something with them. Taking baby steps here.
