Question about putting Photo's in a Quilt

If you have added photo's to your quilts...how did you incorporate them? I can print on the special photo fabric just fine....but what then???

Do you use the fabric as is or do put a backing on it?
Do you adhere the photo to another piece of fabric after printed for more stability and then sew around it like an applique?

Have any of you washed a quilt that had photo's on it and if so how did that come out? Was it really durable?

Thanks!

This is mine http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...er-t71167.html (my MIL has a big family so I had to include a photo of everyone LOL).
I'm not sure if she has washed the quilt yet but I made it 2 years ago. I just sewed all the photo's straight into the quilt.

I have used them in the center of star blocks, as the window in attic windows, when printed larger (say 12x16) as the center medallion in a quilt. I tested washing one photograph to make certain it would remain printed. I just tossed it in with my regular laundry load, including towels, and it came out beautifully. I figured I'd try the harshest test--I'm sure none of the recipients would ever wash a quilt that way so I could be certain there'd be no problems. I print the photos on muslin and use them as they are, without backing, just like any other cotton.

Thank you both for replying...sounds like I can do this.
