Question about re-creating this block.
1 Attachment(s)
This is a picture of a block from my DD's baby quilt. The flower blocks were alternated with plain green blocks. Unfortunately, the quilt is shredded beyond repair (it was hand quilted and DD washed it a lot). I want to make her a new one that she can use. The petals are diamond shapes. Can I just create a diamond template from the existing petals and use that to make the new flower blocks? Let me know what you think.

That is a basic 8 point star block. No you can't make a template from the existing block as it is no longer accurate in shape. Look for templates for a basic 8 point star block in the size you need. Or ask someone who has some skill in geometric drawing to draw you. Don't be freightened by my use of the words "geometric drawing" as this is a basic use of the compas and ruler. If you are close to a quilt shop or fabric store they probably will have a basic 8 point star set of templates. You need the accracy in cutting and sewing to make the sections even.

Thank you Holice for the name of the block. I didn't know what to call it. I appreciate your quick response.

Here is a good tutorial with pictures. This is kind of a fussy block because there are Y seams.
http://www.quiltuniversity.com/y_seams.htm Here is one with a bit easier piecing plan. Same look, no Y seams... http://www.squashhousequilts.com/201...-tutorial.html |
With the videos I posted there are no y seams.
