Ok, I've been slowly collecting things for a 30's quilt. I have a charm pack and a bit of yardage so far - and a white sheet. Was thinking about doing pinwheels. But then I impusively bought a honey bun (it seemed like a good price and the fabric was called Hello Betty - well, my grandma was named Betty and this quilt will go over the rocking chair I got from her - sentimentality -
good reason to impulse buy, huh!? :roll: )

Anyway, I didn't realize how narrow the strips are (1.5 inches) - at first I thought maybe I could use them for sashing - but then I realized that the sashing would be all different fabrics then. So now what do I do? Can I use this honey bun? Any other ideas? I kind of liked the pinwheel idea.

I have some honey buns that I bought impulsively too. Only I knew they were narrow but somehow I bought them anyway! Then when I got them I though what in the heck will I do with these things?? Soooo I don't know yet-I will probably do some kind of string type or maybe coin quilts with them. I LOVE 30's fabric in pinwheel quilts so I hope you do still decide to do that with them. One option is to sew similar colors of the honey bun strips together, cut into squares, and then use those (cut in half) for your half square triangle blocks. Does that make sense?

Sew them together end to end, make two of these sets and sew them together slightly off set, for a scrappy border...

How about sewing them together, then cutting out the shapes you need from that. It would make scrappy pinwheels.

I love pinwheels and they go good with the 30's fabric. Maybe you could use the honeybun on the backing. Pieced or strip backings are fun and unexpected. Start playing around with what you have and see were it takes you. I love this part of quilting. I'm a "use what you have" kind of gal!

and i've seen wonderful qlts with scrappy sashings too.

I have a 'french braid' quilt started , using 1.5" strips,,,,,, and the Aunt Grace fabrics. great use for scrappy strips and its turning out quite lovely!!!!

Gale - thank you soooo much for posting that moda link!!! I think the pinwheels get lost in the multi-fabric'd sashing, so now I know for sure that that's not the look I want! But maybe I can figure out something for a border... or sew them together into charms and make the pinwheels with them... I know I definitely need more squares anyway.
