question about scrappy quilts with t-shirts
Has anyone made lap quilts using T-shirts? I have made quilts from t-shirts, using either the front or the back, but what about using the other parts, such as the sleeve and cut off parts. Would these t-shirt parts be a good resource for scrappy quilts?

my 2 cents: I think you would have to stabilize everything. If that is not a problem, go for it and please share the results.

I think I would save t- shirt scraps for polishing clothes OR the sleeves you could cut into yarn to crochet or knits into rugs OR T-shirt pieces could be used as raw edge appliqué on a quilt top for the French Rose pattern?

great ideas for recycling.

I use the leftover bits for making braided rugs (in theory - haven't yet actually completed a rug...) and I did an entertaining experiment with weaving-in-the-round: I used my daughter's hula hoop as my frame and tied T shirt strips across it to form a radial warp; I then wove long strips of stretchy T material around and around, expecting to generate a nice flat round rug. But when I cut it loose from the frame the tension of the strips released, and I ended up with a soft-sided bowl! Quite cute, but totally unexpected. Here is my cat asleep in the bowl:

well, aren't you clever? love your model.

AlisonQuilts ... it obviously is the Cat's Meowwww!
You should make more to sell .... people will pay high $$s for their kitties! :) CajunOwl ... check out Too Cool T-Shirt Quilts, for more info about making t-shirt quilts. They don't stabilize the t-shirts. Your extra parts could be used for filler blocks, along with the stamped areas. |
That is a creative suggestion. I have never tried to make the braided rugs. Cats will sleep anywhere!

Thanks for the replies. I have made t-shirt quilts, one with stabilizer, others using the t-shirt back. I wanted to find out if it is worth my time to try and make something using the leftover scraps. Or if anyone else had suggestions. They are good for cleaning dirty areas and then can be thrown away.

What a GREAT IDEA!
