Question about Tension
I know it sounds silly, but how do you know if your tension is correct?

Look in your manual and compare your stitching
to the manual( usually show a picture) and then compare to picture. then adjust accordingly. |
If your stitches are firm, straight and lie flat on both sides of the fabric, and the seam is not puckered, then your tension is right for the fabric you're sewing on. :)

The method I use, I learned decades ago, can't remember where it is from but it works. Prepare a sample of the fabric/fabric sandwich, thread the machine with the thread you intend to use, one color for the bobbin and a different color for the top. Set the machine with a wide zigzag and stitch for about 2 inches. Check both sides, neither side should show stitches from the other side. Adjust tension from top. Don't mess with the bobbin tension. I have a spare bobbin case for special bobbin uses.

Ideally the two threads should meet in the center without either be pulled to the other side. In the case of machine quilting, they should meet in the sandwich. Your manual should show a picture as others have mentioned.

you should see the same sized little 'dot' of thread on each side of the seam...stitch, dot, stitch, dot....and both stitch and dot should be the same size on both sides ...
