My mother loved to piece quitls. She is now in the nursing home and cannot do anything with her hands. This year for Christmas the family wants to give Mother a quilt for her bed using one of her quilt tops. Since I am the only one with any quilting knowledge, I am in charge. Problem is, I have never tyied a quilt. I decided on tying so that everyone can participate.
I have a full-size floor quilting frame. Should I set the quilt up on this? What do I need to tye with? Like I said, I have never do a quilt like this. Any help is appreciated. We are not doing this will the week between Christmas and New Years when all the family is here. Thanks, Elsie Keaton |
I tie most of the baby quilts I make. I use all 6 strands of embroidery floss and tie with a square knot. I put mine in my frame just to keep my layers from shifting. I have to pin baste as my frame doesn't roll the three layers separately. That's a really sweet thing for you and your family to do for your mom. Good luck!

Here is a site with a lot of ways to tie
http://www.quiltersbee.com/tyingaquilt.htm I use the large balls of crochet cotton or embroidery floss to match each area post a picture when it is finished. and welcome to the board |
The top I am using is a bow tie. I plan to tye in the center of the bow. It is done in greens. Should I tie with white of green? I am going to back it in dark green to show less dirt and stains. My frame rolls so I will not have to baste or pin.

I would probably go with the green that is most complimentary to the other greens in the quilt. I don't use white just because it looks grubby too easy from just being handled, but that's me. You might try both and see which one looks the best.

All tie all my baby quilts and most of the larger ones too, I use perle cotton. I also do a square knot.

When you tie a quilt, how far apart should one put the knots? Is there a rule (or rule of thumb) for the spacing?

I tie alot of my quilts and I've used both embroidery floss and yarn....I tie them according to what it says on the batting (every 4 inches for most but have done as much as every 6 inches)

For those ladies who have said they always tie the baby quilts, is there a specific reason why?

Hi alimaui....everyone has their own way of doing things. in our area... we do not hand tie baby quilts because of the danger of them pulling out the tie & swallowing it, however some people do use their machine to make a fancy of zig zag tie stitch.

That is so sweet. I'm sure she will love and cherish it.

I tie off all my baby quilts with
6-strand embroidery floss. Heres an idea for you ..... Instead of plain green see if you can find one of the " green varigated" colors; as they are rather pretty. |
I have only tied one quilt. It was a king size made from 4in blocks from my stash. I put it in my floor frame just like I was going to hand quilt it and then placed a tie in the middle of each block. I used varigated thread since there was so many colors in the quilt. I enjoy hand quilting, but liked the old fashioned look for this quilt. [img]
