I'm hoping you wonderful quilting buddies can help me out. My vintage electric singer, size 66 bobbin, is out of kilter. The tension was fine, then it wasn't. I was in the middle of quilting, and didn't move the machine, the dials, the thread, etc. I had it serviced recently and can take it back, but, would like to be able to solve these issues myself. I read the book, changed the thread, changed the bobbin, changed the needle. All is clean. All is correctly threaded. It is oiled and lubricated. The motor purrs. I can sort of get a good tension if I set the dial on 1 which doesn't seem right to me. What have I overlooked? Do these machines require other than a new Schmetz quilting needle?

If I'm not mistaken (and I often am!) unless the machine has been modified, it takes a different needle than the standard 15x1...I have the charts at home, will look it up when I get there!

Have you cleaned between the upper tension discs? If there is a tiny piece of thread or some lint stuck there, it will suddenly change your tension. Best way to clean it is to open it all the way out (setting of 0 is the loosest) and then use *unwaxed* dental floss all around between the two tension discs. (If you look closely, you may be able to see the tension discs. They are what tighten up to put tension on the thread when you dial to a higher number.)

The other thing I wonder about is a tiny piece of thread caught somewhere in the bobbin area. It can be hard to see if it's just a small piece of thread, but still can wreak havoc with your tension.

Did the tension change on you before you switched needles? If so, I wouldn't think it was the needle that caused the original problem.

Dang it! I can't find the charts!! I'll keep looking, but it seems to me that a model 66 takes either a 2 or 2.5 (In Boye sizes)
