I made a throw cover top.Bought the backing 45in.Well it isn't wide enough for the throw cover. Now what am I to do?
Cut the throw down on all sides or buy the quiltbacking?I hate to do that as it is like 16.99 a yard and it takes more than a yard for the throw?HELP!

Generally people piece the back if they don't have a piece wide enough.

katmom54 10-31-2010 11:47 AM

when I goof and buy the backing too small, I piece it as borders with scraps from the top...if not available either, you can use neutrals or coordinating fabrics too. It actually adds something extra to the design too, and if you just split your backing and insert a piece in the middle, people will think you planned it that way

How big is your quilt? For most quilts you need to put more than one width of 45" fabric together.

I don't have the URL handy, but there is a method by John Flynn for the backing that might help. Hopefully someone will post the URL.

Piece the back, it gives it more character  :D:D:D

I always use some of the fabric from the front & put a border around all 4 sides on the back to make the back large enough. Just be carful when making your sandwich that you have equal amounts of border on all four sides of the back. I stick a straight pin through the top to make sure back is lined up correctly when back is pieced.

Check out the site http://www.ohfransson.com She pieces her quilt backs with different fabrics all the time and they look neat.

add a strip down the center of that fabric (after you cut in half). make it maybe the size of your blocks on front at least. we hardly ever make qlts the width of fabric. what a novel idea!! hmmmm. no more pieced backs.

gale 10-31-2010 01:14 PM

Another way would be to sew the strip to the side, and then sew to the other side (making a tube) and then cut in half wherever you want-you can have the added strip in the center or make it off center.

Actually after thinking on it, I don't think either way is any easier. disregard. lol

Thank you all for the wonderful ideas.I am sure I can get it fixed somehow. It is a Christmas gift for someone don't know who yet LOL.

And I do think I have enough scraps to fix it .

Purple fiend The throw is around 50 in. wide. So it's not way off.

I will check out the other sites posted here also.I wish I had a way to post photos. But as of now I haven't any way.
Thanks again to all of you

I couldn't find where she had anything for piecing backing. Just on sandwiching and free motion and couple of others. :?:

It's not a tutorial there-but usually when she posts a picture of a quilt she'll also show her backing. Here is a link where she shows some of her backs.

Thanks alot :thumbup:Those are AMAZING I would never have thought of that idea BEAUTIFUL!!!

Berta,
I would cut the fabric in 1/2 lengthwise and add a strip in the center. Your backing needs to be 2-4" wider than the top, same for the batting.

If you are piecing your backing just remember to cut off the salvage edges. It will be harder to quilt and they don't shrink like the rest of your quilt will.
