I don't have quite enough flannel for my backing but do have some of the non-flannel backing from tha back. Has anyone ever combined flannel and regular fabric when piecing?

Hope this doesn't turn out to to a double post. Thought I pressed send but I can't find the post.

Is the front cotton, flannel or a combination?

I think if you do it right and maybe frame the flannel in cotton, or frame cotton in flannel it would be fine. I'd think long and hard before I just willie/nillie put the two together. As long as it looks intentional - why not!

The front is all cotton. If I combine the two fabrics for the back I'll figure out some sort of design so it looks intentional. I'm just wondering how it will work with the quilting and washing.

I would make sure that the flannel has been washed 2 times to keep it from shrinking.

Will once in hot water do it or should I wash a second time?

my goddaughter made her first quilt with me. It was simply sewn together squares on teh front with a border. She loves looking at all the fabrics on equilter and picked two for the back. One was regular cotton, the other flannel. I figured what the hey! It worked beautifully. I'd do it again. Go for it!!

If you are combining regular cotton with flannel, I would wash and dry twice, just a rinse to get it wet the 2nd time should be fine. Flannel can be a real stinker about shrinking, even LQS quality. Love the snuggly feel of it though.

i mix flannels and cottons all the time- for tops and backs-i love working with flannels- they are so nice and soft- and usually work well with other cotton fabrics- just pre-wash the flannels- they will shrink more than the other cottons.

Might, but I sure would wash it twice. Hot water both times. Keep measuring it to make sure it has stopped shrinking.
