http://www.womenfolk.com/ has the history of a few different blocks. There's another website I've been to that had more, but I can't remember the name of it.

It will be interesting to hear replies. You could google Quilting history and see what comes up. The library may be a good place to check also.

The Underground Railroad Quilt book by Eleanor Burns has some wonderful history and patterns in it.

Try typing "quilt historian" into Google and you'll get several suggestions
The best I know of are Barbara Brackman's books and Roderick Kiracofe's American Quilt, also his Cloth and Comfort. I'm unsure of the accuracy of Burns' book. |
I would not rely on the information about blocks in the Underground RR books. Much discussion about the accuracy.
Barbarga Brackman is one excellent source; probably the best. Her books on blocks give dates and source of each block in the book. Believe they are titled: Encyclopedia of Pieced Patterns" and Encyclopedia of Applique Patterns" She also did a series of articles in Quilter's Newsletter on blocks and focused on blocks with similar themes such as those of state names. |
this is a history of the bible blocks.
http://www.patternsfromhistory.com/b.../bible_bom.htm all histories have come down such a long way that a lot of changes have been made. take everything with a grain of salt. |
