Has any one made a mistake; I mean chose a pattern cut out the pieces, then started to sew and after a few rows knew it was not going to work out. What dose one do with the pieces? Help!

Quilt4u 06-24-2008 02:04 AM

Oh ya the quilt was or is a braid with flannals bad idea. And I love braids I already did one.

reneebobby 06-24-2008 02:12 AM

I cut out pieces for a quilt and didn't have the slightest idea on how to sew it together. hahahhahaha So there it sits till I can at least figure it out. Oh well, such is the life of a new quilter.

braid has strips . How about a rail fence? Got a dog or cat? make a small quiltfor them :D

When cutting out for a whole quilt I cut for one block first. I make that block to see if it is going to work. If it does great! I finish cutting for the whole quilt. If not then I haven't wasted the fabric for the whole quilt. Been there done that! LOL

Strips are 2 1/2 by 3 ang. at end. cut for queen

fabricluvr 06-24-2008 04:29 AM

not sure what the fabric looks like, but i'd probably cut those 2.5" X 3" down to 2.5" X 2.5" and make a scrappy quilt or use them as cornerstones on a charm quilt if you can get more of similar fabric.

Quilt4u 06-24-2008 05:04 AM

Thanks for some ideas. I think what I have done I will make into a winter dog mat for my dogs crate. The scrappy quilt sounds good and no I did not cut up all my fabric; and I can not find any more of the quilters flannel I bougth at Jo-Anns 3 years ago.

tlrnhi 06-24-2008 05:07 AM

I think we've all done what you did.
I once cut a quilt, well, 1/2 of it, then took a break for a couple days. Went back to it, THOUGHT I was doing good, only to find out, I cut the WRONG colors for the WRONG blocks. UGH!
I took the entire thing, put all the same shapes and sizes into baggies and it will be for a scrappy triangle quilt I will make one of these days.

I think I have one going now. Foolishly, I cut all the squares - thousands! I'm sturggling through 2 squares at a time and I now have 10 squares. They are so far from perfect . . . barely acceptable . . . I'm debating about where to go from here. If I do 16, I could group them in 4s and do sashing between to make at least a throw-size quilt. It's supposed to be a wedding present for DD and DIL (married nearly 5 years now). Here's a picture of a couple of the blocks . . . any ideas?

I do that to, but with me new to quilting, I wanna make sure I know what I'm doing. I love sample blocks.

I'm not a pro, but I like it the way it is. I don't see anything wrong

Quilt4u 06-24-2008 05:25 AM

dj I don't see any thing wrong with your blocks. I think they are beautiful.

is a pattern that could be adapted, too.

You can use the ones you have as a center medallion. There is another star pattern I know of that will work, too - let me see if I can find it.

Quilt4u 06-24-2008 06:00 AM

fabricluvr 06-24-2008 06:01 AM

Oh my gosh I think that is really pretty don't know what it's called but I'd call it a wedding ring love....with those hearts sets it off great...I made a quilt that I did a mistake on didn't catch it till I had the blocks done,,,well the quilting gals I quilted with never even noticed till I pointed it out...and when I did they said they thought it was made that way cause it was on all the blocks...so thats my two cents and I'm sticking to it!!

DA Mayer 06-25-2008 02:04 PM

how about table runners??

DA Mayer 06-25-2008 02:31 PM

Have you ever worked with the gridded fusible interfacing or stabilizer. I just bought some at Walmart with 2 1/2 in grids. you cut your fabric into squares the size of the grid square and you can make a landscape or water color quilt. The flannel might make a nice outdoor/ woodsy scene.

I'm calling it "My Heart's Home" since that was part of their wedding vows, and the hearts point towards the center. You are all so encouraging, I think I'll plug along and start two more blocks. If I get 6 more done, I could put 4 of them together (4 sets of 4) and do sashing between them. Thinking about trying some small paper-pieced butterflies in the sashing if I can use some of the pre-cut fabric in the butterflies...or something...

Brenda Retzlaff 06-26-2008 05:53 AM

I'm no expert.....but I love the pattern and colors. If it was my quilt, I'd put some sashing between the blocks. I think it will be stunning when you get it done. We're always waaaaay to criticial of our own work.

ania755 06-26-2008 06:19 AM

:( so sorry it happened to you....
I would sit and cry for a while.....
Then make another quilt
Then go back to the first one and think about some diffrent project...may be some bag? some aplique???...something will come out of it...just let it rest and (cook) for a while...

jazzy 06-30-2008 04:28 PM

I tell you what I have done I just make it any way there is always some one who would love the quilt and be greatful to get it.
