Hello, Everyone! I looking for help finding a pattern for a quilt with pockets. When I retired last Nov, part of my gift from my co-workers was 4 1/2 quilt squares with a note attached from approximately 40-50 different people. There were also lots of extra pieces and larger pieces of fabric for background, etc. I would like to make a quilt with pockets in it so that I can put each individual note in the pocket as a keepsake. This will be a quilt that will hang on a wall and would not need to be any particular size. Can anyone help me with this?

Try looking for an advent calendar type of pattern and then just size it to your needs. I know that they have pockets usually.

I have also seen memory quilts using shirt pockets or jean pockets.

You might also consider having the notes printed onto fabric, then do a patchwork alternating the fabric squares and the printed notes.

Let's say your quilt is being made out of 6" blocks.
Take a 6 1/2" square as your back ground fabric.
Take another 6 1/2" square out of the same or complimentary fabric
fold it in half, right sides out, press a good crease into it.
Lay it on the first square, the folded crease going across the center and the raw edges going along the sides and bottom.
stitch 1/8" around the folded fabric to hold it in place.
Add this block around the quilt to tuck your notes into.
You can adjust the height of the pocket by cutting the length of the block longer or shorter.
You can also make one out of three squares of fabric. Fold 2 of the squares into a triangle, press a crease into them.
Lay one across the lower corner raw edges to the left and the bottom with the crease going at a 45 degree angle across the main block. Lay the other piece with the crease going across the opposite way. Stitch it down the sides of the folded pieces with an 1/8" seam. Where the fabrics cross will also give you a decorative pocket.
If you want it to look like an envelope, add this to the one above. Cut an additional 7 1/2 or 8 inch square, fold it into a triangle, right sides together, sew around the outsides, leaving a section unsewn so you can turn it out. hand stitch the opening closed. Place this piece at the top of the block with the point down and covering the opening of the pocket. Trim it to fit the block and sew the top in place with an 1/8" seam. Sew on a small piece of velcro to the flap and envelope, to hold the flap in place.
Try it with paper first to get the look you are after :wink:

I would laminate the notes so they will be preserved.

I thought about laminating but was concerned about how much weight it would add to the quilt although a don't guess a package of laminating sheets is very heavy. I will probably do that. I started working on it this afternoon and finally got organized enough to finish a square. I am putting the two triangles on the square to make a "V" pocket (Like an envelope but with no flap). Then, because some of the other squares were completed and I had to match the size, I am putting 4 pockets to a large square with sashing between the pockets. They are going to make 10 inch squares when finished. It is looking really good. I can't wait until it's completed enough to share. Thanks for all your help!

I've seen recycled jeans and overalls made into quilts, using all the pockets as part of the design. If you have access to a scanner, maybe scanning and printing them on fabric could be an option. I know for myself, sooner or later, I'd forget the notes and they'd end up going through the wash.

I do have a scanner but would like to use the original notes - otherwise, they will get lost somewhere else. lol Laminating sheets couldn't be any heaver than denim, so I think that's the way I'll go. I'm also going to put a dot of velcro in each pocket and on each note so they won't get mixed up. The quilt will be hanging and not used, so hopefully it won't have to be washed as often.
