Quilt Patterns
 

Where can I get the pattern for the disappearing 9 patch? I love all the pictures but also need patterns to refer to. Any help would be appreciated.

There are many tutorials online you can check out. Here's one:

You can use any size blocks you want. What you do is sew 9 squares into a block, then you cut that block in half down the center in both directions, then rotate a couple of the blocks and resew back into a big block. It's very easy.

I like to use the same color for my center squares in the 9 patches and usually put my darks in the outer corners and lights for the rest. When you reassemble, the center blocks can create a secondary pattern.

As for the math...well you will not get a 12" square, which many people want. I suppose if you wanted to work with odd fractions you could.

4" cut squares will result in a 10" finished block
4-1/2" cut squares will result in a 11-1/2" finished block
5" cut squares will result in a 13" finished block

Here is an easy one to learn from. Very well written, and is a 12 1/2" block. Click on the direction sheet included in the link, and it will enlarge. If you right click on it, you can save it and print for reference. Very descriptive tutorial and helpful for beginners.

The version my guild uses involves sewing together several scrappy 9 patches then making 2 diagonal cuts and reforming them into a quilt.

I downloaded the free Nook app for both my computer and my phone. Most printable files can be opened in Nook and then reopened on your phone or computer later. Works great for having the info at your fingertips.

Have you seen a picture of the layout you want to make?? I saw one recently on the board with the sashing done in white. I like working with 6.5 cut squares Try a test run with 9 squares. Sew them together, then cut down the center of the Nine patch block vertically and horizontally. There, you will have 4 DP9 blocks. I believe on the PBS show Quilts of Valor that Eleanor Burns teaches someone who is new to quilting to make this quilt for a veteran. Hope this helps. Good Luck !!
