Quilt problem... maybe :)

Hi peoples

I decided to make a sock quilt, which sounds simple enough.... until you see the socks. They're the knitted fuzzy socks that are soft and comfy.

I know this is a difficult fabric to work with at all, plus you don't even have the benefit of being able to felt them.

I've done a lot of searching, but no one seems to ever have made one.... or made anything besides stuffed animals, which you don't have to cut the socks for.

My worry is that the moment I cut them into squares, they'll start unraveling from every side.

Any advice on how to make this project work???

Thanks all!

You probably need to open up the sock so it lays flat, then fuse it to a stabilizer (I would recommend fusible nylon tricot -- less expensive if purchased online from a drapery store, but also available in small packets at JoAnn's). Only then would you want to cut a square. I would experiment with a sock, as you may want to staystitch before cutting a square. For example, if you want a 2" finished size square, you might want to stitch a 2.25" square in the sock before cutting it at 2.5".

Do you have a serger? If yes, follow prisms idea then serge the edges. Let us know how it comes out

Yeah go with prism99's plan! That would be the only way I could think to do it!

Do you want to cut the socks into squares? If so you will probably need to fuse a lightweight fusible to the back to control ravelling and stretch. Are they big socks or little socks? Whole little socks would look cute sewed onto a background fabric square.

Here is my sock quilt: LOL I've had this pattern for ages. I need to make one.

I have cut socks to make the sock monkeys and it curls up instead of raveling. I think a fusible interfacing will be the way to go.
