I saw a pattern this week called Focus Pocus that uses large squares of fabric. It is by Swirly Girls designs if you Google it.

This wildlife photo might help you. If you google about making panels into quilts, you can see various ways to cut your fabric. Have fun! |
I like both of the patterns that are linked, depending on how large your figures are.

I like Attic Window quilts (though I've never made one myself). Some are done to make it look like a continuous scene outside the window, but others are done with different panels in each frame.
