My sister just called me to say they are moving to New York City a week from this Monday! WOW! This was totally unexpected. Her husband has been requested to attend a 3yr program to become a priest. He is very excited, my sister...well lets just say when he suggested they could get a small studio apartment, her first comment was NO WAY! She wouldn't have any room for her sewing machine and stash!! I have a feeling that will become her life more than she realizes. She said she would just order fabrics online because she didn't think there would be any quilt shops in NYC. She thinks they will be in or near Manhattan. SO... my question to all you wonderful people is.... Anyone know of quilt shops in or near New York City??? I would like to be able to create a "welcome" basket of sorts with quilting items and a address/phone number LIST of quilt shops any where semi-near by! Even places they could make a weekend getaway too. Thanks for sharing!

The City Quilter

Once she discovers the garment district she will be hooked. I like cotton but will quilt with whatever is put in front of me. There is a shop in Hartsdale, which is a not too long drive from the city. There is at least one in Queens...will do some more research. I am too broke to shop, so am not very aware yet of where they are and The City Quilter provides enough threads and notions if needed.

Don't they still have a large garment district in NYC? Could she get fabric there?

i shop in the garment district or online. LQS in NYC and Westchester County have extremely high prices compared to online sources.

so if she doesn't have a problem shopping online she'll get more bang for her buck online.

There is a Joann's in Westbury NY, which in in Long Island. And it's true about not having room in NYC. Since I've lived here, I've had to become very creative with space. Renting or buying real estate sure is expensive here. But there's lots of great things about living here as well. I hope things work out well for them.

Welcome to NY.. Since you haven't been living here, you might not ave time to sew, as there are so many things to do.. I did the studio thing, and managed to quilt a bunch of qilts.. You learn to make do.. I'm now in a one bedroom, and have three machines set up..
