quilt shows and SID

I heard somewhere that a quilt that had been quilted using SID would have little chance of winning or even placing in a quilt show.

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this? I passed this on as a fact to a quilter who hand quilts, and now I am wondering if I was right at all. She seemed surprised, and if I am wrong, I would like to correct it the next time I see her.

Thanks for any input.

That is not correct from my perspective as a judge. SID is ok is appropriate to the space and well done It should stay in the ditch. It is a good technique to add dimension to the area. However, should be carefully and well done.
A common comment from judges is "ditch quilting should stay in the ditch".

that is not accurate- any types of quilting are judged fairly- any quilting on a *show quilt* needs to be balanced, well done, be appropriate for the quilt. many fabulous quilts have won prizes at shows that are sid quilted.

The quilting should compliment the top design and be within the distance required. If SITD meets those standards than it is perfectly acceptable. With that being said, if it is competiting against a beautifully done feather design that compliments its top design, than the feather will probably place above it.

Yeah I figure fancy stitching will catch the eye of the judges and place higher. IMHO

Thanks, ladies. I am going to correct my comment to my quilter friend as soon as I can.

Although fancy stitching poorly done will fall below SITD well done!
(all things being equal!)

SID and quilt shows

This "Winding Ways" quilt pieced by Kay S. was quilted with SID in the body of the quilt and a simple freehand design in the border. And as you can see did very well in the show.

Wow, what kind of show is that where they safety pin the tag and ribbon into the middle of a quilted border and not clip it to the edge of the binding? I've not seen that done before.
