I have a problem with the spray staying in my quilt for a long period of time. What am I doing wrong?

What exactly is spray?

dehalsne 10-31-2010 08:38 PM

spray adhesive like 505 used in quilting to hold quilts together for quilting

too long or not long enough?

it is not made to stay for a long time, if you are working on a large project that is taking a long time (hand quilting?) maybe you would do better to spray small areas at a time. the basting spray holds (to a point) for you to put your quilt sandwich together, take it to the machine and quilt it. if you are doing something different than that something different would probably work better for you; like thread basting or safety pins.

The spray stays in too long and makes the quilt stiff. I only sprayed lightly. Is there a spray that is temporary?

Which brand are you using? I started with Sullivan's (pink can) as that was what I found at Mary Jo's (Gastonia). We use the June Tailor brand at my one quilt guild to baste and that seems to work just fine, too. My problem with not sticking was that I didn't hit the edges well as I was afraid of overspray and we work in a senior center and I didn't want to get it on the carpet (table is covered with brown paper). I use a sheet at home on the floor so it's way bigger than what I am working on so have no problems with getting edges good. Using too much of the spray may be why it's stiff. My quilts are not stiff and the spray holds as long as is needed.

Hope this helps.

Do you mean even after you wash it?

I had a problem with the quilt spray getting all over the floor...it is terrible to get off.

How long will the spray stay in the quilt? I used the spray on fleece with a cotton top and it is really stuck. It does not look good!!

In my experience it comes out when you wash it. That is, if you used basting spray like 505, June Tailor, or Sulky KK2000.

janb -

Yep it is horrible to get off things you don't want the spray to be one. Cover the floor with something bigger than your project - like an old cotton sheet (on my one guild we cover our cutting tables with brown paper - tape it to the table top) - and you shouldn't have a problem with overspray. Maybe vinyl table cover (depending on the size ofo your project) will work - or even some flannel-backed vinyl from the fabric store.
