Quilting with Sari Silk?

The director of the Dog Rescue I work with says that "Sari Quilts" are 'big' right now and wants me to make one for us to use for fund raising...

So far I have avoided trying to quilt with anything but 100% cotton. What special skills do I need to quilt with silk? do I need anything equipment wise to sew with other than my basic singer?

Do I just need to say NO?? lol advice is appreciated!

Shana, just moving this up hoping someone knows something about this because I sure don't. Good luck!

Thanks Gigi :) Since I don't have a 'real' job right now, people are finding me lots of projects to "help" with. lol otherwise known as "projects ONLY done by Shana" lol

I use silk thread on my domestic for quilting It works great.

Sari's are not necessarily made of silk. they are also made of cotton. The Sari quilts that I have seen were all made of cotton. http://www.betterlivingthroughdesign...e-sari-quilts/

I don't know anything about Sari Quilts.
I have however handquilted with silk and I find it no different from quilting with cotton.

I have a couple of silk saris and if I were to cut them up for quilts, I would definitely use silk thread. Both of mine are embroidered with 24K gold, so trying to find a pattern that would keep the original design would be difficult.

sorry, not use to talking with other quilters and I'm using my 'layperson, doesn't have a clue' vocabulary...The saris in question are made of silk...I have never PIECED with silk before...as with most things you can find a yes & a no to every question on the internet lol several bloggers said that silk will fray and fall apart much easier than other fabrics and it has to be whip stitched immediately after cutting.
