Quilting thread tension problem
 

I am about to quilt my first quilt (a small 32x42 inches!) and bought some great thread, Superior Thread King Tut 40/3. I am using a Berning 640e and can't get the upper thread tension to bring up the lower thread so you don't see the upper thread on the backing. Has any other Bernina users had this problem?

Well....it just sew happens I have been having trouble with my tension. I have a Bernina 830 but that is not the machine I was having trouble with!
I have about 75 (big)spools of Superior King Tut 100% Cotton 40/3 and this particular spool is a beautiful very lightly varigated black to navy or navy to black! I have had to take the thread off the spool and put it on a different spool.
It has been more than frustrating because I am using a Tin Lizzy 18 (LA) to quilt a queen sized quilt.

I finally finished doing the quilting and took it off the frame! I have so any bad places I will have to pick some of it out and re-do the quilting! I am not a fancy or fussy quilter! So this is bad!

I had the thought that maybe my thread was too old....but the more I think about it ~ If I am using wonderful Supeior thread...how can it go bad if it is expected to last the same length of time as the rest of the quilt?????!! Some of my thread is 3 -4 years old! I am going to have to get busy! I am also getting some of that Sew Ease that has been talked about lately

you do not say what you are using in the bobbin??? often using the same threads top & bottom help with tension problems- if your top thread is showing on the bottom the top tension is too loose- if tightening the top tension does not get your tensions equal you can try to loosen the bobbin tension a little bit- but i always hesitate to mess with the bobbin tension- it does depend on what you are using though-
also, if you visit the Superior thread website they have lots of great help-tutorials-problem solving ---and you can contact them for (personal) help too.

I have tried King Tut on both my Janome 6600 and my Pfaff.....to the point...I do not use it any more. I have tried same thread in the bobbin, lighter weight and heavier weight but still I get a tension problem.

I love King Tut thread. I have learned to not be afraid to change the bobbin tension. It only requires a very slight turn on the screw. Left to loosen and right to tighten.
But I understand that some machines do not work well with some kinds of thread.

Thanks Superior Threads for posting that "mini tutorial". I am going to try that, too, as I have had problems in the past.

This are great tips, now that I've done my income taxes I can get back to the sewing room! I was trying to use the varigated thread on the top and the bottom. I'll have to try and see what I can get working for me. I am finding that quilting is an art!
