I received four packages of the Q for K quilts. All are the four patch, one large patch design. With the kits you received did you maybe sew it together differently than the design? leave some strips some patch? I made one it is very cute (pic to be added) and was thinking it would be fun to mix it up a bit.. but how?? Also, my first kit was cut "wonky". The four patches made 6 1/4 not 6 1/2 like the big patches so after I stupidly sewed the rows together amazingly.. the corners did not line up so I had to take it all apart and start over. (lessons learned about measuring).. secondly the border one of the strips had a huge v cut out of it, lucky for me it was on the part I had running over (part to cut) but didnt notice it until I cut it.. so with your kits. Measure everything and also.. check the squares and strips before you sew. I will be fine toothing the new kits.

Here is a pic of the quilt top I just finished.. gearing up to finish it (ugh the dreaded quilting part of quilting!)

quiltnana 11-18-2009 10:42 AM

I had the same problem with one of the colors for the four patch cut short but was able to trim them even and then made the square to match. I thought about making different patterns but was worried I would run out of a fabric and it's not from my stash so I made two extra quilts from my stash in a D9P and a windmill pattern to change it up. My granddaughter Ashley loved this project and is looking forward to using grandma's longarm to quilt them. It's a great project and a worth while cause.

amma 11-18-2009 02:10 PM

My first kits pieces were a bit wonky, so I cut them down to match and then I added a small border from my stash to bring it back up to size. I would think you could change the pattern if you have enough fabric or have some to add to it. :D

SherriB 11-18-2009 03:14 PM

I thought I was the only one with wonky cut strips and blocks! I didn't want to say anything but glad others have. One of my quilts kits was way off, but I made it work, so far.

Up North 11-18-2009 03:52 PM

Maybe we overwhelmed them and they are rushing!! Mine was right on. Not quilted yet, I am scared!! I don't want to mess it us.

pvquilter 11-18-2009 05:36 PM

My squares were off also. Thought it was just me. Its a fun quilt tho.

Olivia's Grammy 11-18-2009 05:37 PM

My kit was great. Perfectly cut pieces. I've already made and mail back two. I was quite surprised today when I got an email thanking me for my quilts, and asking me is I wanted another one.

Barb_MO 11-18-2009 05:49 PM

The kit I just finished seemed to be ok. the big block fabric was a little wonky, but I thought it was because it wasn't the weight as the other fabrics and maybe I was stretching it out of shape

sewmuch 11-18-2009 05:54 PM

Oh, I better check mine out....just got it yesterday and haven't had time to start, quick glance it looked good, cute material.....got batting today....

dunster 11-18-2009 06:39 PM

I just finished one of their tops 2 days ago. Some of the 3.5" strips were cut badly, but fortunately they were too large in areas, so I was able to trim them down. They probably have different volunteers doing the cutting, and some are more accurate than others.

topper1 11-19-2009 11:15 AM

yes ive changed and added to material they dont care. i just go 3 kits yesterday cant wait to dig in

Calico Grammy 11-19-2009 11:56 AM

Mine was absolutely perfect! Guess I was lucky. Finished a second quilt from my stash, getting ready to quilt them! Wish me luck, I'm new at the quilting part! Gona do something VERY simple.

Edie 11-19-2009 12:10 PM

I am finishing up my third one and they have all been four patch. I was hoping for a DNP or a Pinwheel. I tried it with the binding this time. I like the double binding and this is just a single. Won't do that again. I suppose the best bet is the pillowcase style! If any of you got the frog one the backside is adorable. I am now starting on the cowboy cows.

I do have to find a cheaper way of sending these quilts. I can't afford to send them as often as I would like to make them. Any suggestions??????
Post Office charges $7.02 to mail one! I thought I had read somewhere that you could mail in two for the same price as one! Did I dream that?

I am having fun with these, but it is getting hard to send them at that price.

topper1 11-19-2009 12:44 PM

i would like to send cheaoer too but dont know how

MonicaLW 11-19-2009 01:27 PM

I have done 3 all four patch and one more to do. When I send my own I do a different pattern. I mailed three out today (I could have fit four maybe five and really should have) in a priority box to recycle the box I had, it cost $12.70....... If I had used a plain box it would have been $10.50. It could be more cost effective if you are sending more than one. My kits have all been measured and cut pretty close so no problems there.

marta 11-19-2009 01:37 PM

Take heart! I also started Q for Kids and mis-read the directions, and had used all of the border fabric in the process. I called and they said not to worry about it; just make it and it will be okay.
They said the only 2 problems they have are people who get a kit and don't return it, and using too heavy a batting.
So, I am finishing mine with the wrong blocks sprinkled in the quilt, and it is okay. I am using double flannel sheet, which isn't as heavy as the batting, but I didn't have the right size, and our Wal-Mart was low on everything in batting, and didn't have the weight they mentioned.
So, don't worry about it, as it will be fine!

I finished piecing a quilt kit from quilts for kids, and then dug into my stash for appropriate fabrics for more quilts. The fabric they sent was a little off in size, but not so much as to make a difference. I am ready to quilt - the real challenge, as I hand quilt most of my projects. But I couldn't resist the chance to help out.

Edit - Thanks, Marta, for the idea of flannel for batt. Our local store is out, as there has been a sale recently!

brendadawg 11-19-2009 01:59 PM

I'm hoping to find a more economical way to ship them also. I sent 2 yesterday and it cost over $9.00. That was for Priority mail, which was only 50 cents more than parcel post.

ywilma 11-19-2009 02:30 PM

I just finished a quilt for kids kit. I followed the pattern they wanted. My pieces were cut exactly as they should be.

justme 11-19-2009 02:35 PM

No problems here... fabric was cut great, I am quilting it now ... will post picture when I am done.

pvquilter 11-19-2009 02:35 PM

I finished my quilt. Just need to wash and send off. I hope to do more after the holidays.

pvquilter 11-19-2009 02:40 PM

I misplaced the web address for getting kits Anyone have it.

quiltincharlotte 11-19-2009 03:36 PM

WOW!! Your quilt is beautiful!! I love our arrangement of colors. That is where I am always confused. But I love the hand quilting! Beautiful job!!! Charlotte

Ragann63 11-19-2009 04:03 PM

My two were cut pretty good. I noticed the strips dipped a bit in the middle, probably because they are stack cutting. They are sewing together great! I am making the kits as they send them and using my creativity on the extra quilt each time. Looks as if we all got the same prints this go round!

quiltincharlotte 11-19-2009 04:08 PM

Sorry if I am a little dumb here, but where are you getting the squares (kits, blocks) from??

BeSue 11-19-2009 04:54 PM

I just got my kit an hour ago I guess I need to do some measuring before I start. The material I got is so cute it is for a boy I can't wait to start it.

No, you didn't dream it. There are special boxes at the post office that you can get and if you can fit it in the box and it is less than 70 pounds, you can ship anything in it. If you place the quilts in a plastic bag and use the vacuum cleaner to suck the air out, you should be able to get 2-3 quilts in a box for the same money it costs to send one. They will shake out and be fine when they reach their definition. You just have to make sure the box closes. Good luck! Check USPS.gov

Janstar 11-19-2009 05:33 PM

My fabric was cut ok. Thanks for the heads up on mailing OSQ. I will send mine out tomarrow. Took the quilts to two different guild meetings so maybe they will get some more! Everyone seems real interested in helping.

Edie 11-19-2009 06:07 PM

Check out Quilts for Kids - it is sponsored by Downy (fab softener). Google Quilt for Kids - Downy. They send you the fabric, all cut, ready to go, less the batting. Get your batting, make the quilt and then send it back to Pennsylvania. They are darling quilts for little children that are in the hospitals. They have to be all machine done.

Good luck! Edie

Just received my second kit. Cost me $9.69 to mail one, I will try a pack and mail place next time to see if it is cheaper! I'll let ya'll know.

missbehavin 11-19-2009 06:57 PM

I had also read that it is just as much to ship two as one... Maybe they were talking about there flat rate boxes from the post office?? That is the only thing I can think..

katier825 11-19-2009 07:14 PM

Here's the shipping info for Priority mail. Whatever you can fit in the box can ship for a flat rate. They have different sized boxes at different prices. There is also a priority option that isn't a flat rate. If you know the weight, you can gauge the price. There's a chart for that in the link below too. I'll probably just use the priority box this time.

Edie:
No, you did not imagine "send 2 for the price of one" postage. It's written in the info. I'm wondering if they'll ship both for the price of one if you buy the postage boxes that indicate you pay the price of the box and whatever and however heavy the items you can stuff IN THE BOX can be shipped in that box...1 pound to 100 pounds so long as it FITS in the size box you buy??? Just a thought.

Another epiphany...
I'm wondering if you might have a Q for K point person right close to where you live? Somewhere on their website it gives the names and addresses of the different administrators of the program in each state. Maybe if you have a point person close to your home you'd be able to drop the quilts off there rather than mail them. I see where you live in the Cities, Minn....the point person may be a tank of gas to get to her/him so mailing would be less expensive but maybe that person lives 4 blocks from you too. Never know???

I'm working on my second. I have the just finished the same one as the picture shown just above this post...bugs, butterflies and now I'm working on one from my stash and from fabric I bought at the Quilt Fair yesterday. They are very cute, simple, fast to make quilts, fun quilts.

Good luck and thank you for making the quilts.

Barb_MO 11-20-2009 07:20 AM

If you get the flat rate box, you can stuff it full as you can for that rate. My post office used to have those tuffy bags, and I'm sure one quilt would fit in one of those.
my quilt is about 11x13x2 fold, which would fit in one of the tuffy bags.

You could probably go to the post office with you quilt/quilts not packaged and ask what would be the cheapest way to send it.

I don't know if any of you have a seal a meal but if you put the quilts into a seal a meal bag and suck out all of the air you will be amazed at how much you can get into a box.

Oh and my kit was cut well.

Yes, it is my house and, I, too love the porch. It goes around three sides! A lot to sweep but well worth it! Thank you for the compliment.

I, too, have drooled and admired your beautiful home. Bet sitting on that deck rocking to the sunset is a magnificent end to your days. Love it.

Thank you for all of the wonderful comments! I moved a lot as a child and young adult and I wanted a house that my children would know as "home." We have been here for 16 years and I don't think I would trade it for much. So many incredible memories! I still walk around and am amazed that it is mine!
