i am looking to start a new quilt and was wondering if any of u cantell me the best way to make a rag quilt as i have never made one

It depends on how big you want your quilt to be. How big you want your squares to be and you have to decide if you want to use batting or flannel for the middle. There are many posts on here about rag quilts, if you do a search I'm sure you will find a lot of information. I made my squares 6 1/2" and used flannel for the batting and my seam was 1/2". They go together very quickly. If you need to know anything else, just ask. Even if you don't know yet how big you want to make your quilt, you can always start it and then always add more blocks. There is no way to mess up a rag quilt. Good Luck! :D Please be sure and post pictures.

As Live2teach said there have been many posts about rag quilts. I made my squares 7" with a 1/2 inch seam. I used cotton for front and back and flannel for the middle. I cut all three squares the same size. It really does go together fast and easy. The hardest part about a rag quilt is snipping it after it is sewn. I really suggest that you buy a pair of fiskars rag quilt snips. It will really save on your hands. I have made three and am working on my fourth. They are going to be Christmas presents for some of my close friends and family.

I am glad I checked this out because ou can mess up a rag quilt i had to throw 2 of mine away because they knotted up but I used quilt batting. So I am going to try the flannel in the middle instead of on the back. Oh before anyody says anything I did put the X on it before I sewed them all toghther the only thing I can think of is that when sewing them toghther the batting was a bit smaller than the outside square. It was hard to sew them on my machine. I used fleece material on the back and cotton on the front. So I will try thr flannel in the middle.

I cut my squares at 8" and cut my batting or flannel at 6"
and use a 1" seam. this leaves large seam so looks more raggy!
also I found electric scissors can be your friend!

try using fleece for the middle or for the middle/back. here in my part of Texas we don't need a heavy quilt, or maybe its my age, i don't need alot of heat,LOL! the fleece and flannel are a nice thicness and warmth, molly
