Rag Quilt
I would like to make a rag quilt with homespun fabric as the front. What do you recommend for the backing and filler?

cotton batting and what ever fabric you want for the back- either regular quilting cottons or flannels work well- homespuns (rag) very well- flannel will give a fuller raggy edge than regular cottons so it only depends on if you want a (chenille) type edge (with regular cottons) or a heavier-thicker edge you get with flannels.
stitch an X across each block before constructing the quilt- to (quilt) the squares- hold the batting - |
I actually made several homespun rag quilts. I made a 'sandwich' using the same fabric for the front and the back. I used flannel for the batting. They turned out very nice, and ragged well.

I used the same on the back and front. Either all flannel or all homespun. Are people washing them in their home washing machines or taking them to the laundromat?
|
Idid not have any trouble with my home washer but I have heard that some washers get plugged up and have a real mess.

I went to the laundromat. You should have seen the threads in the washer and dryer AND on the floor. I didn't want to have all that in my washer!

I would recommend to take any newly made & finished rag quilt(s) to the laundromat for at least 2 times (a few more times to be on the safe side) before washing/drying at home. I place the quilts in a front loading machine & don't pack them inside-very loosely. I run the machine at a regular cycle-opting for a prewash cycle if available. I dry the quilts in a dryer also loosely with not too many items inside the drum itself.
To see one of my recent rag quilt projects actually in the process of being washed & dried as still images (JPEG photographs), see: http://sites.google.com/site/compact...y-quilt-series And another completed example below:): |
