I chose to make a Rail Fence Baby quilt for my first one. I bought fabric in aqua's and greens. (6colors + 2 extras for small and wider margin.) The lady at the fabric store helped me with the fabric selection. I was just going to do three colors but she said most do 6. (Two different blocks) It is going to be so pretty. But----- I did spend a lot of money. So, for my next project I will need to think less $ per yardage.

What is the quality of Walmart and Hobby Lobby fabric?

You just have to feel of it and be careful. I've gotten LQS fabric before that was a little lower quality. I think you can get good fabric or poor fabric just about anywhere.

Hobby Lobby will have some fabrics similar to quilt shops, but the best advice has already been given--where ever you buy--go with the feel.

Walmart can have fabric that is stiffer, but that is the sizing they use.
My first couple quilts I used Walmart fabric, and the seams Poped, it made me sick.
I have stayed with LQS, and some on line purchases. Today I purchased some Hancock, for pillowcases and boxers for my SIL.
The saying you get what you pay for is true. On the other hand, some good buys are Great buys.

I always shop the LQS discount racks. Great fabrics Wal-mart and Hobby Lobby (or less) cost. One LQS has fabric 4 bucks a yard..... As long as I am not set on a certain line it works fine.

Start paying attention to fabrics you like, the name of the manufacturer is often in the selvage. I have had very good luck sticking with name brands I like when I buy on line such as Hoffman, timeless treasures, bernatex, red rooster, kona bay, etc. I try to buy mostly LQS when I don't buy on line, I have been sorely disappointed with some JoAnne fabrics with quilts I made in the beginning fading terribly and the fabric literally falling apart. Some Walmart fabs are OK. I have used them for some homespuns if they felt right and were 100% cotton but I have pretty much quit buying my fabric from them too. I don't have a hobby lobby yet. Just saw a sign of one opening near by but really I prefer LQS with on line being second. Sometimes it is hard to tell the true color on line but I still manage to use it :-D

I get fabric from Hobby Lobby quite often. It is as nice a LQS fabrics are. They carry Kona Kotton and some other name brands. There brand is by Brother/Sister. Not sure who makes it. Most of the time the fabrics are 30% off and every little bit helps.

For the longest time, our HL never got anything new in. But now they are getting in new lines and I love all of them.

I'm probably going to get yelled at for this but when it comes to making quilts I get the best fabric I can afford.

I agree. Got fabric at WalMart once as it was the only available fabric within reach---and the darn stuff faded, went gollywoggers, and was worn out in no time--that is when I found out that they buy the cheapest grades--so just cause it is VIP or Cranston does NOT mean it is good quality!
There are lots of places online with good fabric at lower prices----like 4my3boyz.com(some at $2 per yd.) Not the newest and perhaps not exactly what you might rather have, but I got some lovely prints there recently at $2 yd. and free shipping!
