Rapid Fire Hunter's Star

Went to a class on Deb Tucker's Rapid Fire Hunter's Star today. AWESOME. The instructor was wonderful, there were only 6 students so we received a lot of attention. I loved it. This system really makes short work of the Hunter's Star.

amma 12-03-2011 07:01 PM

Sounds like you had a lot of fun! Can't wait to see your's :) :) :)

erstan947 12-03-2011 07:09 PM

Can't wait to see pics:) Sounds like a fun day!

Anna O 12-04-2011 07:17 AM

Awesome is right! Gotta get that. Thanks for sharing!

babyquiltlady 12-04-2011 07:36 AM

Stars are exciting to sew and to quilt. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

AliKat 12-04-2011 09:35 AM

Am curious on how her 'rapid fire' Hunter's Star works. A bit of explanation would be most helpful, so, I found this on YouTube:

thanks,

virtualbernie 12-04-2011 01:12 PM

Thanks alot Sunnie and Ali! You guys just made me spend more money! :hunf::D

thepolyparrot 12-04-2011 01:26 PM

How cool! I bought the Thangles kit for making the Hunter's Star, but this looks soooooo much easier!!! Thank you! :D

Pinkiris 12-04-2011 01:59 PM

Can you share with us a picture of what you have done so far? I love works in progress shots!

thimblebug6000 12-04-2011 02:38 PM

That was an interesting video to watch but I didn't recognize the pattern because she ends up with a solid star in the center whereas the others I've seen use alternate colours in the middle. Have fun with your new toy, but think if I were to make one I'd just stay with the old fashioned templates or the pp. version http://quilterscache.com/H/HuntersStarBlock.html

Here are three blocks (2 from class and 1 this AM) that will become a table runner. The class was for a wall hanging, but I have no wall space available...LOL

Oh, that's fantastic! And it's beautifully pieced, too - you did a GREAT job of keeping those points lined up! Way to go!

One of the great things about this "system" is that the points almost line themselves up. Makes the piecer look better than they are. LOL

faykilgore 12-05-2011 04:55 AM

Okay, now I have to try this system. Your points are PERFECT!!! I love the fabric you chose.

doowopddbop 12-05-2011 05:51 AM

I met Deb Tucker at Quilt Market - what a wonderful tool! A Hunter's Star quilt has been on my WHIMM list (Work Hidden In My Mind) for some time, even made a block for a swap here on the board! That one was paper-pieced; so time consuming! So I couldn't help myself and just ordered a ruler online. (Thanks, Santa) Maybe when things slow down after Christmas I'll have a little time to quilt for myself. Love your blocks, Sunnie!!

stitchinwitch 12-05-2011 06:06 AM

GORGEOUS Sunni - I tried to make the pattern with pp and gave up - How would I adjust the measurements if I wanted to make a 12" block instead of a 6? Did you have the special ruler? I was hoping to use all the gazillion rulers I have already!

THANKS!

I have the Petite Star Template. It will make 5", 6", 7" and 8" blocks. The Large star ruler makes blocks finishing to 7", 8", 9" and 10". A block is only 1/4 of the star so my 6" blocks ended up to be a 12 1/4" star block. Hope this isn't too confusing.

MamaHen 12-05-2011 06:23 AM

Very lovely block, technique you learned was wonderful. Loved the Youtube video, just may look for the ruler myself. Oh Boy! another project in mind-------

mountain deb 12-05-2011 06:27 AM

Thank you Alicat for looking up that tut. Now to remember to buy that ruler, just what I need--another ruler. SIGH

btiny36 12-05-2011 07:16 AM

Yeppers it's a great tool...bought one at the quilt show here in Saskatoon this fall. Haven't used it, but planning sometime in the new year...

jaciqltznok 12-05-2011 07:26 AM

awesome..I have always loved this pattern! I got NO sound on that video..not sure why, but will check it again later!

Iowa Grandma 12-05-2011 08:10 AM

I have been trying to find the rapid fire tool to purchase in the 12 1/2 inch size. Can you help me? I saw it demo'd at the Des Moines quilt show but should have bought it then and didn't.

Joan in AK 12-05-2011 08:30 AM

Grandma Alice
See post #18 in this thread. The small ruler is for several sizes and make blocks that are 1/4 of the star.

Anna O 12-05-2011 10:07 AM

The contrast in your fabrics is wonderful. It will be a beautiful quilt!

newbiequilter 12-05-2011 10:47 AM

This video is great - she explains things very clearly. Thank you.

jarenie 12-05-2011 12:43 PM

Thanks for the heads up. I want to try this.

Pinkiris 12-05-2011 02:37 PM

Sunni--You are doing a wonderful job on those blocks. Thanks for sharing a "preview" with us. Your fabric choices look great, too!

psumom 12-05-2011 03:00 PM

Where was the class? I'm from Morgantown, PA too!! What a small world!

debbiewi 12-05-2011 04:45 PM

I made 2 baby quilts using this method and it went so fast! they were fun to do

pjnesler 12-05-2011 06:35 PM

Hunter stars are one of my favorites - thanks for sharing!

sailsablazin 12-05-2011 07:57 PM

I thoroughly enjoyed the you tube video and totally understood it--which is pretty good for a newbie...

Where do I get it and how much is that cool ruler? It sure looks like it will make my life a whole lot easier..

missionslady 12-05-2011 08:09 PM

This is the first time I've ever heard of a Rapid Fire Hunter's Star. I've heard of Hunter's Star. I watched the video; very interesting! This would sure be a good hands on class. Would like to try working with one before committing:-)

I was lucky to meet Deb Tucker too at the Des Moines Quilt Show this year. I really liked her and she was so personable. I already use her Tucker Trimmer so when she showed me how easy her new ruler was for the Hunter's Star I was hooked. Surprise huh since I am a gadget/ruler lover. She is so nice and always trying to figure out easier ways for us to make our quilts.

Joanne9of12 12-05-2011 09:16 PM

I love this ruler! I made a quilt using this back in June and you can see a picture of it on my blog. Here's the post.

Sold! :D I need all the help I can get! I have the feeling that you're just being modest, but if the ruler helped you make something that precise, it's definitely something I need, too. :)

Oh, that's really beautiful! Was your experience with the ruler as smooth as Sunnie's? Very nice quilt! :)

cheri stonespinner 12-08-2011 06:41 AM

This looks like another block for my bucket list and now I have tips and tools to make it easier, thank you!

mucky 12-08-2011 07:08 AM

This is going to be my next project using batiks.

gramarraine 12-08-2011 07:47 AM

I also took a class to make this pattern. I actually got 2 18" blocks put together in the class and now it has been so much time that I need the class again to finish the quilt. Our teacher was excellent also but too much time since I did any work on it.
