I was thinking of using charm squares - some maybe as is, and maybe some cut & resewn - if some will be used that way, then the original full-size squares would be too large, correct? Sooooooo... if some squares might be cut into triangles or some other way, how do you figure out what the size of the original should be cut down to? Or is that even how it's done?

I would cut and resew a few of them in the way that you are planning on using them. Then measure those, square them all up to the same size. Then if you are going to use some of the charm squares "as is" cut them down to the same size :D:D:D

You might look at the Moda Bake Shop website. There are many patterns designed for charm squares. Also, check out the Missouri Quilt Company site. They have video tutorials using charm squares.

I recently made some of my charms into HST (half square triangles) using 4 differnt prints I was able to make an interesting pinwheel design. 4 HST make a 8.75" block...they look fabulous as potholders or sash and make a quilt.
