Paper pieced fish? I did something like this last yr for my SIL.

It's a variation of a Lemoyne Star. If you take off the extra fins it's a Lemoyne Star.

According to Jinny Beyer's marvelous new book, Quilters Album of Patchwork Patterns, pg.288, #11, this block has several names:
Clara Stone called it Fish in 1906 She also called it Whirligig in 1906 Later it was also called Airplane Motif, Fish Quilt, Fish Block, Dove in the Window, Goldfish, Trout and Bass Block Jan in VA |

In have a book called 101 Patchwork Patterns by Ruby McKim, the pattern is in that book. First published in 1962, but may still be available on ebay or amazon. Lots of other traditional patterns, too.
