Red bleed onto beige - Help
 

Just washed finished baby quilt. Used three shout sheets. Red still bleed onto beige some. Have not dried yet. What can I do?

I believe Synthrapol is what you need. Go to your local quilt shop and they should be able to help (take the quilt with you). Just don't use Retayne, or it will set the colors where it bled to - ask me how I know :0(

I agree with above what you need is Sythropol. DO not put it in the dryer until the blled has been removed. Heat can set the bleed.

Yes, do not dry!!! Are you using a top or front loader? You need a lot of water to use synthrapol, but it will work. If you have a front loader, you may need to treat it in the tub.

Well, I went to the LQS. They had the Carbona products - the sheets and a transfer dye powder. I used the powder first. It did remove the red from the white, BUT now the red fabric is an orange/brown color. Actually for someone who does not sew, it would look like the color was chosen. I do not like it as much, but I will now give it as present. I need it for tomorrow. I am now washing it one more time and using the Carbona color catcher sheets. According to the LQS, the Carbona sheets work much better than the Shout sheets. I don't know if I believe that because the Shout sheets have always worked until now. Anyway I will be able to use my quilt, but I wish it was red. Thanks to everyone for your help.

I have also learned to soak my fabrics in hot water before cutting them - like colors together - and to watch the water!

If the water turns color- the offending fabric gets soaked some more - until the water rinses out clear. Some fabrics have required several changes of water - and an occasional one gets thrown because I can't get it to stop coloring the water.

One of the first quilts I made has dark burgundy sashing - which I washed once in tepid (barely warm) water before cutting it - and when I washed the finished quilt, it did bleed a little bit. (Washed in tepid water - short gentle cycle - HOWEVER - I did not get it in the dryer right away - it set in the laundry basket for an hour or so before I dried it)
