I have three newer machines, sewing/embroidery machines that I love. But the older "vintage" machines sew a better straight line. My new ones you have to work at keeping them straight as the older ones just know to do it.... If I had to make a choice, the new ones would go................. how about you?

Charlee 09-21-2011 05:36 PM

I only have the one newer one, and I'd have to consider keeping it for a few of the functions...but if I could only keep ONE machine? It'd rip my heart out to release the others, but I'd keep the 15-91...as long as I could also keep the attachments! :)

When I get my treadle restoration finished, up and running I'll let you know.

I have a very old Brother that sews so beautifully. It does not have any fancy stitches just straight and ziz zag. It is all metal, no plastic parts in it, and of course it is heavy. This machine is a keepter for sure.
However, I do enjoy having the embroidery machine with all the bells and whistles.

girliegirl 09-21-2011 05:44 PM

Yeah, it is such a hard choice!

Me too!

I'd keep my Domestic 151 and my treadle...I'd let the others go.....if I had to;)

Well, I guess this techie will have to keep all my bells and whistles! I have an older Singer that I am working on getting up and running and will have to see what happens with that!

susan... 09-21-2011 07:55 PM

love the bells and whistles....but still adore my fw

Painiacs 09-22-2011 05:14 AM

Like my old singers!!!

justtrish 09-22-2011 07:07 AM

I got rid of my new machine last week. My newest machine now is a White 770 Auto. (can't find any info on her anywhere) I am keeping her for the fancy stitches!!

annthreecats 09-22-2011 07:18 AM

I love all my machines equally. I'm keeping all of them.

Annaquilts 09-22-2011 07:19 AM

DH and I were talking about that. I would be hard pressed to give up my Janome 6500 or Janome Jem. The Janome 6500 is big and heavy but I can still take it to class, has many stitches, walking foot, knee lifter, free motion foot, large opening, automatic threader, sews great, quilts great, no tension issues, table that attaches, automatic cutter, needle up and down option etc.

Most of my vintage machines are straight stitch only or at best zig zag. Many have no reverse. Don't get me wrong I really like sewing on them but I like the features on my Janome too.

It would be limiting to have only a Feather Weight or singer 201. Even a Singer 401 with all the cams would be too heavy to move around or take along and boy do I miss the automatic threader especially since I am just starting to get older eye issues. If I had to choose it would probably be the Bernina 830 as it has the knee lift, is lite enough to carry, is all mechanical metal parts. Right now I am piecing on a Feather weight and quilting on the Janome 6500.

I told DH I was not selling any. I like them all!

I have newer machines also, but I hang on to my Pfaff 1221. It's an oldie, but goodie. I've found that it is my absolute favorite for FMQ.

manley 09-22-2011 07:51 AM

Love my featherweight. The rest could go.

jlm5419 09-22-2011 08:24 AM

Besides my 2009 embroidery/sewing machine, the next newest machine is the late 70s Kenmore that I bought new. I love my older machines.

Glenn 09-22-2011 02:59 PM

I have no machine younger than 1967 a New Home all metal and weighs 45 lbs, two more electrics 1940 White and singer128 the rest are treadle or HC. If had to get rid of all but one I would keep the 1908 66-1 no the white peerless Hc no the 1916 red eye no!!!!!! I guess I will keep them all.
  Glenn

miriam 09-22-2011 04:52 PM

Now just where are you planning to sell them all?????????

fabric_fancy 09-22-2011 04:54 PM

i have both and i wouldn't trade in my new Juki machines for anything.

the stitches are beautiful just as straight as my vintage singers including the 201 and the featherweight.

while i love the look of vintage and collect them for the art work and history i would never use them over my high tech juki.

cheryl222 09-22-2011 05:02 PM

In the past couple of months I have been lucky to find some very good deals on vintage machines - 2 singers, a pfaff, and a sterling. They are all excellent straight stitching machines and the pfaff can do all kinds of fancy stuff. I have a Juki 98Q I love piecing on and an Husqvarna Quilt designer with all the bells and whistles. I use it only when sewing clothing. If I only quilted, I for sure would only need one of the old machines. They are so far above the newer machines as far as stitch quality.

I'd stick with my old Bernina in a heartbeat. Already trying to figure out how to unload my newish Singer. My Brother sewing & embroidery I like and use occasionally, but sometimes I forget I have it, so if it was gone, it would be no biggie.

Me too - recently acquired 66 treadle (from grandmother), along with the new-to-me 15-91.

I got rid of my Janome - I figured it was just setting around - I hated the dumb thing. It just didn't do what I told it to do and it wouldn't sew through much.

That is why I got rid of my newish Kenmore...It could not handle all the ruffles I like to make..

While experiment with making decorative oven mitts, I discovered that my Bernina 1005 can sew through 6 layers of low-loft batting and 4 layers of cotton fabric. I realized that that was too much batting for my project, but it wasn't too much for my machine to handle!
