restoring baby quilts
 

My step daughter's baby quilt has been very loved. It was a stamped premade quilt that was hand embroidered with squares of each letter of the alphabet. the binding no longer exists and the fabric is worn through to the batting. Is there anyway to salvage it? I am not sure she will appreciate having it restored as she is developmentally delayed, but I thought her mother might like to have it... Any ideas?

Is there any part of it that you can use as a panel and border it for her? I know some kids will not take a substitute
but if part of the original is there the will be more apt to accept it.

I was thinking of using it as a panel... I also considered cutting each lettered block and sashing it out. Then add batting and a new backing. Finally it would need to be quilted again... I wasn't sure it would hold up to much wear and tear b/c each square has worn spots too.

I used to consider doing a kit like this for a baby as all the embroidery is cross stitch and would be something to do when out and about but after seeing how this quilt wore, I have second thoughts.

If it is a favourite, don't tamper with it. I would buy a piece of white fabric and mark on the embroidery pattern of the original. Embroider the same motifs in the same colours and then finish it. Wash the new quilt to make it soft and have it on hand to slowly introduce it to her. That way she can continue to use her old one while getting a new one broken in on a stress-free basis. Depending on her disability, it could be very tramatic to tamper with the original.
