Do any of you ever finish a quilt and then decide to go back to it and do something else on it? I did a quilt for my mother-in-law back in the summer as a Christmas gift, and then before I gave it to her I decided to do some free-motion quilting in the border. I have another quilt that I finished months ago doing stitch-in-the-ditch quilting on, that I'm going to do free-motion quilting all over now just because I think it needs something more.

Anyone else ever not satisfied with a quilt and have to just keep putting more and more "brushstrokes" on it?

I have a redwork quilt that I have been thinking about taking completely apart! LOL It is the first quilt I made - 12 nursery rhyme characters all hand embroidered - all 12 bordered with a different red and white fabric. I was in such a hurry to finish this quilt that I tied it (with white buttons) The quilt is nice, but now I know I could do so much better....I have been thinking about this for a while....my daughter says - no, just leave it as it is - still........I'm undecided about it.

I think as you grow as a quilter, some of your earlier project feel like they are not complete to your present standards, I imaging once you started doing some FMQ and other things that you wanted to improve on earlier quilts, if I could I would go back to some older quilts and do some all over quilting that were tied before I got my big machine. I do also look back and question if I had done this that or the other thing if it would have been better, good thing most of them are gone and so I don't think about them.

I agree, sometimes you just feel the need to add more.

I think it is natural to think that as we "grow" in anything be it quilting, scrapping, and any other activity ..when we see something from the past we may think we need to "improve" it in some way but I think that is part of the growth process and I think they are just friendly reminders of how much we change and get better ...so I just leave them....in a few years our current projects will seem like they are outdated or bad compared to the next now....so why go back in time?

I agree with your daughter to leave it be. Make a new one that you are happy with. I think we learn from each quilt we do and that has something that may not be perfect. No one else will know and sometimes it is better to move on to another project, keeping the experience in mind.

I am usually too happy that it's DONE and I do not ever want to touch it again (to work on).

Amen. Some of them I never want to see again either, which is a good reason to give them away.
