Hi all - has any one done a kaleidoscope quilt Ricki Timms style? Went to his seminar recently, was hyped about trying on, but now that I'm on my own, very intimidated. Not sure about how much fabric, the sizing. Am working an "ugly fabric challenge" and thought this would be a good way to go!

You seem to be confident you are gonna win. Lol

I have a book on Kaleidoscope quilts. I thought some of the "ugly? fabrics would work well in this pattern. Given the opportunity, try it.

It took me two years after taking his super Seminar to jump into it. Not intimidated, but too many other projects. I also watched his show on thequiltshow.com, show 403. It was a busy job and you definitely need a design wall, but once I started I could not stop until it was done. Feel free to ask questions. Any fabric goes and you will need maybe 2 or 3 strips (width of fabric) of 20 to 25 different fabrics, so is not a matter of yardage, but having enough different fabrics on your stash. He also recommends using a narrow strip of black every once in a while to bring up the other colors. I also used some white and loved what it did. Not too important to choose a focus fabric. I thought the fabric with many color stripes would be my focus, and it turned out the the bright green jumps out more and I almost wish I had not used the stripes.

The quilt show: If you join as a basic member I believe that you can buy one show for $2.99.

Feel free to ask.

Mande - your KK took my breath away. I love the little bit of white! Will be trying the KK this weekend. Will post pictures unless it is very bad or I chicken out.

Just read the instructions carefully. Do you have the DVD? Is supposed to be real good.

Have fun and don't chicken out.

I don't know how many hours you sew, but remember you have to design the pattern, cut your templates, select the fabrics, cut them and sew your strata before you can actually start working on the quilt itself. It is definitely not a weekend project, but once you get going is hard to stop. The ironing of your strata is what will determine how well your seams will match and there are lots of matching seams.

Hi - here is an update -- I spent Saturday afternoon designing the template, ironing fabric and cutting strips. Sunday, I sewed the strips into strata, and cut the templates out. I have the first three rounds done. I think the center is too dark ! Have two more rounds to do, which will be prodominately orange and green. Remember, these are on the design wall and not exactly placed. What do you think?
