rulers with paper backing
 

I have of the new style rulers with sharpening edge for your cutter, but can't get the paper off the back. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have tried soaking it in hot water but that didn't help. Why do they put the paper on them anyway??

I have some Long Arm rulers with paper on them too, but have not tried to remove it yet. I was wondering the same thing.

call the company and ask the best way to remove it. i had one ruler that i could not get it off---called and they said it was not supposed to come off! i asked---well how the heck am i supposed to see through it then???and was informed it was not a *quilting* ruler- it was made for scrapbooking-i returned it-
you might try adhesive remover (available in pharmacies) or even a tbsp of olive oil may lift the glue-

I think the paper is intended to prevent breakage when the acrylic is cut. Acrylic can be kind of brittle. I also find the paper to be very difficult to remove. First, I score the paper with a pin or tracing wheel. Then, if the item has no markings, I soak it in hot soapy water for a while. This tends to loosen the paper --- this technique worked well with a set of unmarked "square up" templates. If the item has markings, I use a pad or cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol. Just be careful not to use anything too strong on the marked side of the item. Enjoy your new ruler!

WD40 will remove glue.

It is my understanding that there isn't even an adhesive used. The 4'x8' sheets of acrylic come with the paper on, to the ruler manufacturers. It is some kind of plastic coated paper. I use the edge of a paring knife at the corner to kind of scrape up the edge enough to hold it and then it peels off easily. I sell a little square up tool for my Thirtysomething technique. I peel them off before I package them.

Goo Gone is good for removing all kinds of glue and adhesives. I use it to clean the bottom of my iron when using fusibles, and to remove the glue that seems to stay behind when you remove labels. You can get it at Walmart. Good luck.

Also, if you do not have "goo gone", you can use the spray cooking oil. Spray it on let it set (may take a while) and peel it off.
Then wash in soapy water.

I have used fingernail polish remover to remove the glue, works great for me.
