I need to get some rust proof straight or safety pins. I can use either one. Does anyone know where I can find these not on-line. I'm going to Joanns tomorrow. Do they carry them? What do I look for? Anyone who has these, are they really rust proof for a very long time?

Gosh, in Nevada you're having trouble with rust?? Thought it was high and dry there; what do I know!:D

I use brass safety pins for basting, I've had them for 20 years all over VA and TX with no rust in sight. They are softer on the hands too. Bit more expensive, though.

Look for brass, stainless steel, or nickel-plated brass pins. Dritz has rust proof pins at JoAnn's, but I don't know what is local in your area. In 50 years of sewing, I don't ever remember seeing a rusty pin, straight or saftey, so I think most of them are rust-proof.

Oh, I've had rusty pins here...mostly on items I have left a pin in for some time (shame on me) But needless to say, I now only use brass or stainless pins. I learned my lesson.

If the pin isn't stainless or brass it will turn. If I'm not sure what the pin is made from I toss it. Not worth the chance living in the south to have a forgotten pin cause damage.

You only need to have it happen once to realize all pins are not created equal. Now I shop for High Nickel content, stainless and brass for saftey pins.
I like really fine pins especially for batiks. Some of the regular pins or the long Quilters pins feel like I am trying to drive nails into the fabric. I never thought pins would make such a difference but they really do..
