Scallop Edges
 

I am really interested in finishing my quilt with a scallop edge. What is the "favorite" way of doing this? How do you do the corners, with a scallop out or in? Thanks for all your help, really appreciate all the knowledge I have gained reading these messages.

I haven't ever done a scallop edged quilt but I have done rounded corners. I know, not the same thing!!! I did a quick google search and found this article here on the board: http://www.quiltingboard.com/resources/article-98.html

I think the scallop is almost always out at the corners. You have to plan it carefully so that you don't wind up with a weird shape there that doesn't look like it belongs with the rest of the quilt. Instead of binding, you can do a facing.

Hi. I'm new to the forum, but I did my first scalloped quilt this year. Believe it or not it was pretty easy. I recommend you follow the clear directions found in Quilting: The Complete Guide by Darlene Zimmerman; page 205 - 215. I was pretty nervous about it, but I bought some wide adding machine tape to draw my border on & double check my measurements. This I pinned to the border & stitched over to get the scallop down (like doing paper piecing) . I used Zimmerman's Easy Scallop tool (also comes with easy-to-understand directions) and the scallop was near perfect.

Peggi, thanks for the great tutorial for scallops and the link to some beautiful fabrics and free patterns!

Be sure to cut your binding on the bias. That way it can stretch as it needs to. That is all the advice I can offer.

Jenny Doan at Missouri Star has a great video on YouTube showing how to use a special ruler to make scalloped edges. I immediately ordered one but haven't found the perfect quilt on which to use it.

Thanks everyone for the great advice and references. I will surely be watching tutorials and utube today. Anxious to finish this up.
