Scalloped Borders
 

I am wanting to put a scalloped border on my quilt. The difficulty I am experiencing is that I want the scallops to face the centre of the quilt rather than the outside. Do I have to construct the border and then applique it on to the quilt?

i would take a piece of freezer paper as long as the quilt. now fold in half, over and over till the width is approx the right size for the length of the scallop... now while folded, put a dinner plate on the folded paper, trim round side.... now turn the paper around and check visually...the width can be trimmed at this time to the appropriate width for your design. this should do for both opposides sides...now repeat for the other two opposite sides...

Thanks for your reply. How do you suggest that I turn over the seam and then attach it to the quilt?

Make your scallop border pieces the length you need, lay them towards the center with the straight against the straight edge of the quilt and baste it, then do your sandwich and then put your binding on like normal. The basting will hold the scallop border down until you have done the binding and the binding will then be sewn onto the quilt. I hope that is what you are asking.:)

I would attach the border before you sandwhich just like making anything with curves clip corners I usually on curves I sew then zig zag next to the sew line after i make sure it's perfect. Trim to the zig zag and zig zag again over the edge. I have made a lot of clothing like that and makes that curve strong. My opinion... Good luck!

the simplest way would be to face the scallops, cutting 2 layers of the scallop border, sewing down the scalloped side and then clipping and turning carefully...large scallops would be easy to do this to... set the seams first (you always get a sharper seam line when the seam has been set), after, press the seam to one side as far toward the points as you can from inside.... now the scallops are sharp, finished on the edge and ready to be hand appliqued, close machine edge-stitched, or machine blind-stitched....it would also be possible to make this facing from iron on pellon facing, like a lot of applique is done these days. the important thing is to get those scallops finished on the edge befroe applying...good luck, this sounds lovely.... the corners might need to be played with a bit to make a smooth transition...

Will this be the outside border? Can't picture how that will look with the shape of the quilt. Or do you mean like a swag design on a border. Do you mean something like this shape done on this Hallowe'en quilt?
