Scalloped Table Runner
I would like to scallop a table runner that I'm making but have never done that before. Can anyone tell me the math for doing this or suggest a tool. Thanks for any help you can give me.

there is a scallop ruler, that makes different size scallops and comes with directions

I haven't done one but the books I've read said to use a dinner plate. I bet it'll look great when you are through!

I divide it into equal sections for as many scallops as i want. then i find the right sized plate to make the scallops as deep as i like the look of.

eleanor burns makes a scallop ruler. You can see it on her website

I have a scallop ruler but the dinner plate method works too. I've done it both ways.

If it isn't too big a project I make a paper pattern. I tape pages out of an old phone book together until they are the same length that I want to scallop. I then fold the paper in half, then quarter and then eighths depending on how big I want the scallops. I then unfold the paper and find a round object to trace that fits into the creased sections. If it works out perfectly then I use the paper pattern on my fabric. I find it easier to draw on the scallops to the finished tablerunner and sew the binding on before cutting the scallops. This way it gives you time and fabric to adjust if needed. I am sure others will have their own ideas. I have a scallop ruler on order myself to make this job easier.

Thanks for the information. I want to make a quilt with a scalloped edge. I will practice on something small using a saucer before I invest in a ruler.

Thank you all, very helpful. I'm definitely going to try to work it out on paper on the finished table runner before I cut:)

Please post a pic when you get your scalloped runner done. I love scalloped things, but doing the math is intimidating, I think I need one of those tools.

Eleanor Burns also has a tute on using her ruler that gives some good information about dividing the quilt to get the scallops to come out right.

Sounds like you got a lot of suggestions from rulers to plates and bowls. Will watch for a pic of the final runner. Have fun and learn something new.
