The present project--well--one of them--requires that I attach 1/4" ribbon to the wall hanging. I'm wondering just what is the best stitch to use to not tear it up. One straigth stitch down the middle? A straight stitch on either side? Perhaps a zigzag? I'm open to suggestions from those who have been in this place. :-D

I'm thinking about using the 1/4" Steam-a-Seam to help hold it in place--but it'd have to be together perfectly; I don't know if I should risk it.

A few tiny dabs of Elmers and heat set with the iron may work... I would try it on a scrap first

A decorative stitch just a tad wider than the ribbon would be cute too. A more open stitch, you can even elongate it, so the ribbon shows through :D:D:D

how about a zig zag stitch that is a bit wider than the ribbon. Walk it for a few strokes with your wheel to see if it will fit before you thread the machine.

what is the ribbon for? is it the loop that you use to hang it from? or part of the design? for the design, i would put down tiny dots of washable glue to keep it in place. let that dry well. zig zag or straight stitch really small on the edges. imo, if you do one row of stitching down the center, the sides will flare up and not look so good. if it's to make loops, i would fold back on itself and cover with a small button r applique.

You can also trim down the steam a seam a tad bit too...I have cut it in half before with my rotary cutter and ruler

Rumor has it they now make iron-on quarter inch ribbon if that's any help at this point.

Ooo--good ideas everyone!! Thanks!! The ribbon is part of the design. I can't show it yet because I'm making one for a person who reads this board now and then.... it's a secret.

I have all these fancy stitches on my machine--I think this is a good opportunity to use one!!

I am in the same boat, 1/4" ribbon on a block design and not sure how to stitch it down. Thank you barnbum for asking the question and thanks for all the good suggestions.

I have used 1/4 ribbon on jackets and used a zig zag stitch

Use a twin needle to secure both sides of the ribbon at once. It will give you a perfectly spaced stitch. I use a twin needles a lot especially when machine quilting straight lines.
