Yesterday I made mega boo boo. While I was marking a quilt top with a chalk pencil I received a phone call. I answered the phone, had to write down a number, then hung up the phone. I walked back over to my material and before I realized what I was doing I started marking my material with the ink pen I just used. I marked about a half an inch before I realized what I was doing. On white material no less. AAAAAAAAGGGGHHHH! Hopefully it will come out.

I heard hair spray takes ink out. Can't say I remember if it works.. http://www.ehow.com/how_4886844_ink-...-clothing.html

Oxyclean!!!

I have used Hair Spray on just a few things and it does work. DH has a habit of leaving pens in his pocket and then I find it in the washing maching or dryer  I have even taken ink off the inside of a dryer with hair spray.

On white, it may take a few times to get it out, but keep trying.

jmabby 10-21-2011 03:38 AM

Those Senior moments can make you laugh or get upset, but I'm getting used to them.

Raggiemom 10-21-2011 03:55 AM

I hope it comes outs for you. I have used both Oxyclean and hair spray to remove ink in the past. Not sure if it was on white or not but several washes should do the trick hopefully.

ptquilts 10-21-2011 04:21 AM

rubbing alcohol.

Ann L 10-21-2011 04:51 AM

Been there, done that! :)

At 72 my whole life is a senior moment.
I dont have the eyes or the patience I once had.
Have learned that if sewing starts to go wrong its time to quit for awhile.

Barb44 10-21-2011 08:03 AM

Lemon extract. That's the only thing that has ever worked for me. But you will have to place a cloth under your top because the lemon extract will bleed the ink through the fabric. Keep changing the cloth until the ink is all bled out. Be sure it is extract and not flavoring.

Cheap hair spray is the best... it's chemistry, actually... solvents dissolve like solutes (water will dissolve sugar but not oil). The chemical makeup of ink is similar to the solvent in hairspray. It may require a little gentle rubbing, but will most often do the trick.

I once washed an ink pen (that I'd missed hiding in DH's pocket)... on a full load of just-bought clothes following DH's 50lb. weight loss.... and I mean a FULL load... It took me hours to get all the little ink marks that covered the new clothes... but it worked! I would spray, gently rub, rinse, spray, gently rub, rinse, etc....

Good luck! Oh, and don't worry about the senior moment business... I'm afraid it's a common malady!!

Boy, I think I would have made DH do the cleanup!

I've used Tide Release on many stains, even ones that have been set in by washing and drying and have had good results. Not sure if I've used in on ink, but it may be worth a try.

jitkaau 10-22-2011 03:05 AM

Are we all shaking our heads up and down?? The other day my 26 yr old son used the phrase about himself. Guess senior is a state of mind, not age.

Just imagine what y'all have to look forward to at 79 and counting.

BeckyL 10-22-2011 05:29 AM

I had a pen to break in my cloth pocketbook and soak it with ink. I made a strong solution of Oxyclean and soaked the pocketbook in it and it removed all traces of the ink. Good luck.

kerrytaylor 10-22-2011 06:06 AM

I had a pen completely unload thru my lower shirt pocket and onto the front of brand new white pants. It was so thick it was sticky - ugh! Got a cheap can of hairspray and (holding the items over the washing machine opening) literally drenched both items w the h spray as the machine was filling. Dropped them both into the washer, on the appropriate setting and washed as usual. Worked like a charm. Good luck to you, sounds just like something I'd do . . .

gypsylady5 10-22-2011 06:07 AM

Hair spray works to remove the ink.

alcohol works on leather. Don't know about cotton.

sylvia77 10-22-2011 06:22 AM

I had an ink pen run on the center of one of my quilts once. I got it out with bleach but it made it dissolve, ruined the quilt.

cloverbud 10-22-2011 06:40 AM

My husband was always forgetting to put the lid back on his ink pens and putting them back in his pocket. So I have had lots of experience getting ink out. Cheap hairspray is the best for ballpoint ink. But if it is permanent ink, I make a paste with Cascade and Dawn dishwashing detergent and rub. The main thing to keep in mind...keep it wet until it is all out. Do not dry until it is all out. Once dry it is virtually impossible to get out. It is actually good that it is on white fabric because you can use bleach products to help get it out.

sewnsewer2 10-22-2011 06:43 AM

Try using a pencil eraser 1st, it worked for me.

i have used hair spray always worked for me

Busy Bee Virtual Assistant 10-22-2011 07:36 AM

I found a product at Kmart that I really like called "Greased Lightning". I use it it all the time for my laundry on spots. The trick is to use a toothbrush & rub it well into the material. Don't know if it will work on your quilt, but it does a great job on oil & grease stains.

Rann 10-22-2011 08:08 AM

The hairspray must have alcohol in it or it will not work.

kathyjg 10-22-2011 09:03 AM

I have used hairspray but I have had better luck with the aresol spray.

I haven't tried to get it out yet. I will probably wait until I finish quilting it so I can treat it and then wash it. I hate to leave anything strong on the fabric. It might damage it.

Only some types of hairspray work, so if your first attempt doesn't budge it try another brand.

auniqueview 10-22-2011 11:02 AM

How about dried and set blood? Is there any hope of getting that out of a quilt?
