Am looking for a sewing cabinet. Tired of quilting on the table

Arrow model 300 is a nice one to start. Has air lift and fits most machines, except the larger ones. Depends on how much you want to spend.

I purchased an office desk at an office surplus store. Works wonderful and was only $30.00, versus the ridiculous prices they are asking for the sewing cabinets.

I bought one from Wal-Mart. It was $99.00. I would love to have something nicer, but I keep spending my money on fabric instead.

JoAnn's has cheap ones. I also have found a few on Craigslist... might want to check there too.

I have the same one from Walmarts..and I too would rather spend on fabric!!!

If you want a real cabinet with drawers, doors, and 3 heights for machine (free arm, flat bed, and stored), look for discontinued models. Koala has a whole new line, which I don't like, but I recently got a huge storage unit and cabinet for 1/2 the regular price. Look for floor models, too. Horn has an inexpensive table with an area to the left which swings up and down for free arm or flat bed use. When my boys were little and I didn't have a dedicated room for sewing, I splurged on a Horn cabinet b/c I needed to be able to lock it up. Drawers lock too.

I have 2 from Wal-Mart. I had 1 and Sis gave me hers. I had her Hubby cut a hole in 1 to set my machine down even with the table. I use the other 1 for storage but when I need more space to quilt I push it in front of the one I'm sewing on so it supports the bulk of the quilt. Works out great. My cutting and ironing table is a flat door on legs. It measures 30"x60". No more stooping

Mary Kay - you can get all sorts of replies on a sewing desk/table but it will all come down to how much you would like to pay for it ;)
There are those of us that go to the second hand stores for stuff like that and pick up things for a fraction of the original cost and there are those that will buy only new.

You have a wide range of options.
I'm a second hand store person for some things - a sewing desk is one of those things. You can get a nice sewing table for under $25 at most of them - and most of them include a sewing machine too lol.

I got two office desk tables at second hand stores for next to nothing and I love them and wouldn't have it any other way - but if space is an issue, I'd look for a small desk (with the drawers to your left of course) or a sewing cabinet that you can put your machine in to - unless you would prefer new which would open you up to all sorts of stuff.

I bought my Horn cabinet at Ken's sewing center in Ala...love it, the back flips up for a cutting table, lots of sewing space...google him and it will pop up

I made my own and bought a door and cabinet from a resale shop. Whole thing put together for less than $47.00!

Check out your local thrift shops. I've bought both of mine for less than $30.00 each, one even had an old Singer in it! There both made of REAL wood and very sturdy!

Me too, I have one too. I'm using totes for the stuff that doesn't fit in my cabinet.

Mary Kay 12-12-2010 11:26 AM

Thanks everyone. I was hoping for one used. Maybe someone is not sewing anymore.

I guess I've got a low tech sewing table set-up. I use a rectangle kitchen table that my daughter didn't want for sewing, cutting, and quilting. Then I bought really great 5 drawers on wheels from WalMart. The drawers are almost clear so I can see what's in them at a glance. They also have wheels so They can move around wherever I need them.I made a list of what I needed a space for and ended up buying 3. I didn't consider the expensive stuff. Instead I saved my money and bought the best scissors, rotary cutters, rulers, and cutting mats, and definately the best chair to sit and work in.
