I posted this in another thread, but thought it could be a thread its self. I am sure I am not the only one unsure about what can be used to oil a machine, or even know we should oil the machine... or maybe I am... so I am asking....can the oil that is used to oil hair cutters and electric razors be used to oil sewing machines?

Sadly I just recently learned about removing the bobbin casing thing, and oiling the machine... but I do not have sewing machine oil and of course forgot to get some. I am sure tomorrow I will start sewing on my scrappy fence and want to make sure everything is in tip top shape and oiled... thanks for the help

(sorry for the ellipses I tend to over use them...)

i only use sewing machine oil on my machine.

I have been told you should only use sewing machine oil. I don't know what the difference is.

Rhaorth 10-23-2011 08:48 PM

thanks sewwhat
blueangel, I don't know what the difference is either.
I was thinking, since both are metal, that the oil should be about the same. I have read and searched on google, but all I tend to find is that sewing machine oil can be used on clippers and razors... so the reverse should be true too right?

Don't guess or make assumptions. Use sewing machine oil that is readily available in stores or the internet.

I would ask where you bought your machine. I only use oil that is recommended by Them. Sewing machines are too expensive to use the wrong kind.

I did not buy it, my mother in law gave it to me (she actually gave me two)

guess my best bet is to go get some sewing machine oil.

thanks for the input

I'd only use sewing machine oil. Check your local stores that carry basic sewing supplies. Mine doesn't carry fabric but they have some thread and notions...one being sewing machine oil. Come to think of it ... call your grocery store ? maybe they have something by the lightbulbs and sewing notions...

I use sewing machine oil on DH clippers, but I wouldn't use that kind of oil on my machines. Sewing machine oil is cheap and easy to find. Good luck with your new machine! :)

i might use the clippers oil in a pinch, but not on a regular basis. the clippers run at a high speed and so does the sewing machine, so the oils are probably quite similar
