There are a bunch of us doing the Affairs of the Heart quilt here on the board and one of the helpful tools is the Sewline pencils.

I bought two of them and have only used it once, but I like it so far. I bought mine at Hancock's because I had an order going with them, but saw them in a set at Fabric.com. I would like to have the set and carry case some day, but the single pencils I got are enough for now.

Fabric.com has just a few items when you search for Sewline, Hancock's has a great selection and a great price for individual pencils. Fabric.com has free shipping over $40, you have to pay for shipping at Hancock's.

I also use Bohin France. Got them when I took a class on "Less Than Traditional". They are wonderful.

I love mine and have used it constantly since I received it over two years ago. Mine was the original and you had to buy all the different color refills. I find I use the white one and the pink one the most.

I use the white and the green the most. I find I can make one or the other work on everything I mark onto.

running1 06-08-2011 12:26 PM

I love mine... use the pink mostly!

ghostrider 06-08-2011 12:40 PM

Love it! Greatest thing since sliced bread!

Yarn or Fabric 06-08-2011 01:08 PM

I have one - a Fons and Porter brand one that I got at Hancocks - Joann's also sells it - and I love love love it. I want to get another color for light fabrics. I have the white one right now.
A friend of mine bought the sewline one and I used hers and fell in love with it.

roselady 06-08-2011 02:52 PM

I used the Bohin one to mark for hand quilting and it worked great. Stayed longer than chalk but was pretty well gone by the time I was finished quilting each section. I washed the quilt when I finished and there are no marks to be seen.

Can you mark a quilt for quilting - can't erase under the stitching... Any of it wash out - disappear or just erasable?

Sewline comes out with water (also brushes off with a soft toothbrush when stitched over), don't know about the others.

sewnsewer2 06-08-2011 04:23 PM

I have one a friend sent me. I like it! I have the pink lead (if you will) and I heard the black doesn't come off.

thepolyparrot 06-08-2011 04:32 PM

I have all the Sewline colors, but like someone else said, I use mostly the pink and the white. I haven't noticed that any of the colors hang around after washing - even white on a dark red fabric. The mark is nice and fine and it stays on for a long time - it doesn't wear off easily like chalk pencils. :)

klc 06-08-2011 04:49 PM

I have the Sewline trio; black, white, and tracer point. I use the white all the time and love it!!!

the casual quilter 06-08-2011 06:57 PM

I've used them and they do work well for me. The lines stay sharp and the "leads" don't break easily. The eraser thing on the pencil portion does a good job of removing the markings when you want to get rid of the marks. And I do like that you can buy different colored "leads" and use the same pencil. They load like a mechanical pencil, and you just change out the "lead" if you need a different color. But on the downside, they are sooooo expensive. If I were to loose the pencil portion and have to rebuy it, I'm not sure that I could justify the expense. Just my opinion.

Oops, I forgot to say - I bought the Sewline brand pencils in white, pink and black but I bought the refills in all the other colors and I put them into cheapie .9mm mechanical pencils.

didi 06-09-2011 03:08 AM

Something new for me, will look into getting me one...you learn so much on this forum.

owlvamp 06-09-2011 03:14 AM

I'm going to have to check these out. Been wanting to get something.

I always use them and they are great! They come in several different colours - I have a green one and a pink one - and, between the two of them, I can always see my marks whatever the fabric colour. I've never had need to remove the marks, although there is an adjustable eraser on the end.

Jo Mama 06-09-2011 05:07 AM

I like all the Sewline products. The marker line is distinct and stays long enough to "manhandle" while hand quilting.

AVQuilter 06-09-2011 05:39 AM

I also use this product with great results and agree with comments already said.

mhansen6 06-09-2011 06:09 AM

Yes, I use one all the time. I love them.

sewmuchlove 06-09-2011 06:32 AM

Thanks for asking the questions and all the replies. I saw this just last week at Hancocks and passed it by because I wanted to think about it. Now I know it will work and definitely go back and get one. Also good to know the two colors that work best so I don't waste money on all the colors. Thanks for the information.

JudyG 06-09-2011 06:44 AM

The Fons and Porter refills are a lot cheaper than the Sew Line and as far as I know are the same thing. Where I buy mine locally, you get 6 pieces of the Sew Line or 10 of the Fons and Porter. They are the same price, so I buy Fons and Porter. I have been using the white to mark my dark background for applique of the Affairs of the Heart blocks which Candi mentioned previously.

grandma sue 06-09-2011 07:11 AM

I love mine. There is also a liquid eraser pen that you can use to get rid of the marks. But I think maybe water would also do it.

daisydebby 06-09-2011 07:12 AM

My sewing group has tried them all. Be careful, the pink leaves a mark that doesn't come out entirely. I'm talking about marking your quilt for "hand quilting." I've used the white and green for tracing around applique patterns.

sweetsie 06-09-2011 08:19 AM

I have one,use it often, mostly white. Love love love it.

Iamquilter 06-09-2011 08:32 AM

I have used the white and silver Berol pencil mostly and loved them and they do wash out. recently I bought the white and grey fons and Porter markers and love them also , they alos wash out very well

gramquilter2 06-09-2011 08:45 AM

I haven't used the Sewline but use the Fons & Porter pencils. I use them often and really like them.

Shirlx 06-09-2011 09:07 AM

Does the Fonds and Porter brush out also like the Sewline?

I found that the sewline leads also fit the F&P pencils. Have of each w 2 different leads - love 'em!

Lisa Marie 06-09-2011 02:21 PM

I have a black & white one, love them use them for marking quilt patterns & HST lines.

kwilter 06-09-2011 03:05 PM

I'm sold....will get me some, hopefully with a JoAnn's coupon! Thanks to all for the info!

kwilter 06-09-2011 03:05 PM

Ooops!

joysewer 06-09-2011 07:06 PM

I wish JoAnn's sold them, but they don't.

One difference between the Fons and Porter and Sewline is that Sewline pencils are ceramic.

Janquiltz 06-09-2011 08:44 PM

Sharon Schamber uses Bohin. She also uses very cheap mechanical pencils as the markings erase very easily. I use the Sewline and the cheap pencils. Have not ordered the Bohin's and cannot find them at Joann's or any local LQS. Do like the Sewline.

winia 10-24-2011 09:09 AM

I just finished a quilt where I used the green Sewline.
I washed the quilt, and the green did not come out.
I don't know why, but it didn't. It is under the stitching.
I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do.
